Pomona Win a True Homecoming for Ahten Family

Pomona, CA – A young Johnny Ahten sat in the stands and dreamed of winning the Pomona Drags. Al Ahten, Johnny’s Dad, raced at many historic California Drag Strips and shared the same dream. Fast forward thirty years and Johnny is strapped into his Nitromethane Injected Dragster for the final round, his Dad standing behind him. His wife and two young sons are in the stands. As the race begins, Johnny Ahten the racer/kid-in-the-stands is ready. Al Ahten, the Crew Chief/Dad is ready. They have both been ready for this moment for years. Johnny inches the car in deep and turns off the top bulb. At the flash of yellow the cars launch. Johnny’s .016 light has him out in front. His opponent, number one qualifier and World Champ Jim Whiteley, is closing fast. Tireshake rears its ugly head and Whiteley is forced to get on and off the throttle as his car shakes, breaks, and tosses a blower belt. Johnny Ahten rockets ahead for the win. A 5.428/259.86 flashes in Johnny’s lane. A cylinder or two were out, but the time didn’t matter. Johnny Ahten crossed the finish line first at the race he always wanted to win. Al Ahten celebrated if he was a kid. In the crowd, Johnny’s two sons, as well as other youngsters, begin to dream of Pomona glory.

“This is the biggest race there is for us to win – it’s iconic,” said Johnny Ahten. “All I remember is at about 800-900ft I didn't see him. I kept waiting for Whiteley to come rocketing by. After I crossed the finish line I couldn’t tell if the win light in either lane was on. I began to think I had won, and hoping I didn't go red. I came around the corner and the top end workers directed me to the TV cameras. Then they all started running at me and pointing. I couldn’t believe it. The next thing I know they shoved a Wally in my hands. All I could think was, ‘Is this for me?’ I’m not sure when this will sink in, but I do know it will make the off season incredible,” added Ahten. “The response has been overwhelming with phone calls, emails, texts, and even flowers. It’s a real thrill.” Johnny Ahten went on to say, “All this was made possible with the help of Island Renovations, Combust Filters, NGK, DJ Safety, Hedman Hedders, Mechanix Wear, Fireman’s Brew, and Goodson Tools and Supplies.”

Johnny’s dream weekend started out with a lone qualifying session on Thursday. A 5.489/247.70 pass put the Island Renovations / Combust Filters car in the number twelve spot. In Friday’s second session, a 5.484/259.01 dropped them to #14. Crew Chief Al Ahten and crewmembers Howard Katano, Kevin Colvell, Chuck Costabile, Bob Ahten, and John Rogers worked in harmony to try and get the Stump Puller to go faster. The result was a final qualifying pass of 5.376/259.31 that propelled them into the #7 slot.

Saturday’s mid-morning start to eliminations saw cool air and track temperatures. Shawn Cowie would be the first round opponent. The Stump Puller filled the crisp air with Nitro as Johnny blasted off the starting line first. Cowie caught up quickly and it turned into a good old-fashioned drag race. At the finish line it was Ahten getting the close win with a 5.391/257.58 to Cowie’s 5.394/268.71. Even though Ahten never trailed, it was too close for comfort.

Sunday raceday began at 7am in the Ahten pits, allowing the team to prepare the car and form a plan. They would continue to massage the tune-up and race the track. The elusive higher mile per hour goal was still a mystery. Second round adversary Joey Severance got the advantage at the start. Johnny had that made up by the sixty foot mark. At the finish line, Johnny got the win with a 5.354/259.01 to a 5.493/249.26 for Severance. The victory was costly, as bits of aluminum were sacrificed. A new cylinder head had to be installed in addition to the regular between rounds maintenance. The team thrashed to get the car ready. Waiting in the staging lanes was #3 qualifier Mark Taliaferro. As the Sump Puller was pushed to the line, Johnny Ahten knew what he had to do. Taliaferro had beaten Ahten in the first round in Vegas just a few weeks prior. This time the chance to race in the finals was on the line. Johnny slapped a cosmic .012 light on Taliaferro at the hit. It proved to be enough as Johnny’s holeshot 5.368/258.76 beat Taliaferro’s quicker 5.303/272.01. The crowd and crew went wild and it was time to prepare for the finals. The Ahten Racing Team’s plan to get off the line, get down the track, and make it a good one was right on schedule. Shouts of encouragement serenaded the Ahten Racing team as they towed to the lanes for the finals.

The Final round opponent would be number one qualifier and World Champion Jim Whiteley. The California sun began to set on the historic Pomona raceway. The air cooled and the tension began to rise higher and higher. Al Ahten strapped his son Johnny into the Sump Puller. The desires of a Father, and the dreams of a son were about to be played out. As Johnny raced down the track, they all came true and victory at the Pomona Drags was a reality for the Ahten family of drag racers.

Ahten Bringing Power to Pomona Homecoming

Pomona, CA – The final race of the 2013 NHRA season in Pomona for Johnny Ahten is a chance to fight his foes on his own turf. Ahten grew up going to the Pomona drags and now he has some new –found power to wield.  The Island Renovations / Combust Filters dragster of Ahten Racing is feeling mean after qualifying in the #4 position at last weekend’s Vegas Regional event with a strong 5.323/262.39. The exciting thing about that run is Ahten feels the car has more to give.

“We are going in knowing the car is making power, but getting it planted and avoiding issues is our task,” said Ahten. “Our confidence comes from the data we have accumulated. We have some new sensors on the car and my Dad and I have been pouring over it. We are all looking forward to our home track and running well. The two Vegas events we just completed gave us ideas, and the desire to win.”

Ahten’s Regional Vegas outing last weekend was bittersweet. The first qualifying run was a bit hectic after a small fuel lead delayed the start. Tire smoke greeted the Stump Puller, but in round two a 5.32 made it all better. That run put Ahten in the #4 position and a first round match-up against Garrett Bateman. As Johnny went through his burnout something just didn’t fell right. The run had to be aborted and as final round bound Bateman went up in smoke for the win, Ahten could only grit his teeth and start thinking about Pomona.

“I look at the missed opportunities in Vegas and I can only use them as motivation for Pomona,” added Ahten. “We have made many strides this year with our new combination. Any time you change things there is bound to be a learning curve. The pieces are coming together and the World Finals is our chance to perform the way I know we can. My crew has worked their tails off this year. They volunteer their time and I can’t thank them enough. My Dad and Crew Chief Al Ahten, Howard Katano, Kevin Colvell, Chuck Costabile, Bob Ahten, Todd Rockwell, and John Rogers are the best.”

As the sun sets on the 2013 NHRA schedule, Johnny Ahten sees Pomona as a chance to compete with the elite in Top Alcohol Dragster. The field will be tough, but with the support of Island Renovations, Combust Filters, Fireman’s Brew, NGK, Mechanix Wear, Hedman Hedders, and his family, Johnny Ahten is ready to light the nitro and blast down the quarter mile. Drag Race nirvana awaits those who are lucky enough to be in Pomona for the World Finals. For those who can’t be there you are in luck. Ahten Racing Wins Best Appearing Crew at Toyota Nationals

Las Vegas, NV. – After winning the Best Appearing Crew award at the NHRA Toyota Nationals at the Strip as Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Johnny Ahten quipped that they may not be the fastest this weekend, but they were the best looking. The new duds debuted at the August Seattle race and were designed and sponsored by Island Renovations and Howard Katano.

“Howard and his company Island Renovations have done so much for our team,” said Ahten. “We were really excited when we heard we won. They grabbed us for the photo shoot just as we were coming down the return road after our qualifying lap on Saturday. I still had my fire suit on but to see the smile on Howard’s face made it that much sweeter,” added Ahten.

The Island Renovations / Combust Filters Team started out qualifying with a 5.488@256.94 in Friday’s first round. That put Ahten in number six spot, but the crew felt like something was missing. In Saturday’s second round of qualifying, a 5.507@252.57 was no help. In the final qualifying session, a cylindrically challenged 5.418@255.43 was a step in the right direction. Other than that errant piston that decided not to fire, the run was good enough to set a final qualifying position of eleventh. Sunday’s opponent would be Mark Taliaferro. The crew made the decision to swing for the fence. They hopped the Stump Puller up and prepared to launch one into the upper deck. Johnny was crowding the plate looking for the fastball and took a mighty swing with a .027 reaction time. All was well and good until the rear tires lost traction within a nanosecond. Tire smoke filled the air as Taliaferro ripped off a 5.345@267.59, with Johnny coasting across the line at a pedestrian-like 63.69 mph.

“The car sounded angry and I was ready,” added Ahten. “I saw some cars in front of us strike the tires, but I just assumed our tune-up would prevail. The fast ball I was looking for never came. My guys all worked their tails off. It was great to have some of our sponsors in our pits this weekend. Their support has been overwhelming. I would also like to mention and thank Jim Dunn Racing for their help. Jim has been very generous to us and for that I am grateful," said Ahten.

Winning the Best Appearing Crew Wally did help to ease the discomfort of a first round exit at the Vegas event. Ahten and his crew now are on a mission to add another Wally this weekend at the Vegas Regional and at the World Finals in Pomona. They will still look to hit the long ball, but now with both eyes on the approaching pitch.

Ahten Cards Top Times & Final Round Appearance at Seattle Regional

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Kent, WA. – Johnny Ahten and the Island Renovations/Combust Filters Team recorded the top elapsed time and speed of last weekend’s Regional event at Pacific Raceways in route to their final round appearance. The one thing that prevented Ahten from winning is a bit of a mystery. Usually it is known how or why something happened. This time in the final round against CleanBoost Oil teammate Chris Demke, the one thing became the deciding element. That one thing you ask? The culprit was cylinder number one. For some unknown reason it decided to take the final round off. Johnny recorded a runner-up 5.562/259.11 on seven pistons firing to Chris Demke’s 5.320/268.54.

A weary but upbeat Ahten was happy about the team’s performance but still looking for a reason. “Right after the final round defeat we went to the pits and looked at everything. We could not find a reason why cylinder one went out at the hit. We have never lost that particular cylinder before. We searched high and low for evidence to explain it. We found nothing. I guess you just have to chalk it up to it being a characteristic of an A-Fuel car,” said Ahten.

The journey to the finals was filled with some spectacular speed and excitement. The Ahten Racing team of Crew Chief Al Ahten, crew members Howard Katano, Kevin Colvell, and Chuck Costabile picked up right where they left off at the National event two weeks ago. A strong number three qualifying spot and 5.333 was a good start. In the first round against Aaron Olivarez, both cars had issues, but Johnny got the win with a 5.584/263.87. Waiting in the next round was the red-hot Shawn Cowie. The Ahten Racing gang knew they just had to carry on and go fast. Cowie got the advantage off the line but by half track Johnny caught him and dispatched the two-in-a-row race winner with a 5.313/268.76 to a losing 5.428/265.01.

The Ahten Racing pits were a bit more crowed after that run with fans and racers alike congratulating them on the victory over Cowie. “So many people came by to say hi and congratulate us on the round win,” said Ahten. “We took down a heavy hitter with that 5.31 and it felt great. It also meant we had lane choice in the finals against Demke. The testing and dyno work we did earlier in the year really paid off,” added Ahten.

Going into the final round against the strong running Demke, Johnny had the confidence of his previous performance and the advantage of lane choice. He had the faster of the two cars, but the ominous failure of cylinder one was looming.  After a normal burnout, Johnny backed up and awaited the flash of the tree. When the lights came down it was Demke getting the advantage and the win with a 5.320/268.54 over Ahten’s cylindrically challenged 5.562/259.11. The semi-final victory and final round glory faded all because cylinder one failed to stay lit. The mystery of why may remain, but the performance of the Stump Puller and Johnny Ahten is no longer unknown.

Ahten Looking Forward to Pacific Raceways Regional Action

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Kent, WA. – Johnny Ahten and his Island Renovations/Combust Filters sponsored Dragster Team can’t wait to get back to Pacific Raceways. Two weeks ago at the National event, Johnny’s strong on-track performance gave a big boost to the La Crescenta, Ca driver and team. A near career best 5.27 elapsed time in qualifying combined with a second round appearance are now just numbers on a results page.  The Ahten Racing Team led by Crew Chief Al Ahten, crew members Howard Katano, Kevin Colvell, and Chuck Costabile will have to prove they are worthy all over again.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way things have come together and it’s all due to the fantastic work my crew has put in,” said Johnny Ahten. “Heading back to Seattle after a good outing is so much easier. We have an idea now what the car likes and wants. Zero parts breakage during our National event appearance is also easier on the checkbook,” added Ahten.

The bottom line is something that every racer needs to keep an eye on. Johnny has been working hard to fatten up the financial tune-up with the recent addition of Combust Filters as a major associate sponsor. Mechanix Wear Gloves has also jumped aboard as a marketing partner, and along with long-time sponsors Island Renovations, Hedman Hedders, and NGK Performance Spark Plugs, make up a solid promotional attack.  Fireman’s Brew Beverages continue to provide the party favors and marketing support.

Keeping sponsors happy and providing a credible marketing tool is a big part of Drag Racing today. Going rounds and doing it quickly will be the main focus in Seattle. So stay tuned fight fans, because Johnny Ahten and the Stump Puller are ready for the bell to ring this Friday and Saturday at Pacific Raceways.
