LAS VEGAS (April 4, 2013) – Despite a
first round loss at the NHRA Lucas Oil Series regional event at The Strip last
weekend, Greg Hunter and the ExactAir Compliance Systems Top Alcohol Dragster
team will power through to the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals this weekend,
April 4-7. The Canadian group’s goal remains the same – steadily improve their
performance at every race. Their showing at the regional event wasn’t horrible
– Hunter qualified 6th and lost first round, 5.53 to 5.60 – but it
wasn’t what Hunter and his Kenny Gilmour Motorsports team were looking for.
“We were pretty happy with our first run
out of the box, 5.463 at 264 MPH. We worked on tuning it up and making it go
faster but it didn’t quite go how we thought it would. It broke a lifter on the
last qualifier and hurt a camshaft so we changed that motor going into first
round. We set it up to run close to the 5.46 again but it just went weak. We
found a couple issues in the motor during the week between races so we’re
confident that performance will be back up to where we feel it should be. I
hope to be back in the five-thirties at the national event,” Greg claimed.
“Our goal this season has been to build
on our performance every weekend out. We were trying to at least win a round or
so at the regional. It’s the same this weekend – we want to win a couple
rounds. Of course we want to win the whole race, but it’s a tough field with
some stout cars. We’re confident that we can be right there with the top guys.
Hopefully we can go to the final. It’s not our expectation it’s certainly our
goal.”
Due to a low car count in the alcohol
dragster class, the sport’s fastest sportsman racers will get one less run to
qualify for Saturday night’s first round of eliminations.
“It’s disappointing that we lost the run
but we still get one each day,” Hunter said, referencing the qualifying
sessions scheduled for Friday at 4:30 PM and Saturday at 11 AM. “It would be
nice to have that third run to tune it up aggressively. Going into it, I think
we’ll set it up to point where we know it’ll go down the track and run a nice
number to put us solidly in the show.”
