Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Tuner Tom Howell to Retire

With great sadness, the Permatex/Follow A Dream team announces the retirement of longtime tuner Tom Howell, who recently was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS - also known as Lou Gehrig's disease). His departure marks the end of an era for the team. Howell called the shots when team owner and crew chief Jay Blake began campaigning Alcohol Funny Cars in 2003, and under his guidance the team has won a regional championship, four national events, and 10 divisional/regional events, including three wins in 2015 with driver Todd Veney.

Howell's involvement in motorsports spans more than 30 years, including stints with Marc Rowe Race Cars, the Blue Chip IHRA Funny Car driven by Dave Rowe, and the Florence Motorsports dragster driven by Don Florence. He also has extensive experience with Super Modifieds and offshore racing boats. Longtime tuner Anthony Terenzio, who guided veteran Mickey Ferro to countless Alcohol Funny Car victories, including five in a row to conclude the 2010 season, will take over for Howell in 2016.

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Earns Biggest Win Since 2006

Courtesy of Follow A Dream Inc.

At the SummitRacing.com Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team earned its biggest win in nine years and moved into third place in the NHRA national standings. Driver Todd Veney singled in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final when opponent D.J. Cox broke on the burnout, collecting his first national event title and the team's fourth overall.

"Winning an NHRA national event is a dream come true," said Veney, who grew up about 50 miles from the track, in Wadsworth, Ohio. "It's been my number one goal my whole life, and I have Jay and the entire Follow A Dream team to thank for it. We ran 264 mph three times, qualified No. 3, and didn't have any mechanical problems at all, so it was just a great weekend all around."

"This was a true team win," said Blake, whose Permatex/Follow A Dream crew also won the 2005 Spring Nationals in Houston, and in 2006 won the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla, and the NHRA Finals in Pomona, CA . "Everybody on the team did a perfect job, everybody worked together, and now we're as high in the national standings as we've ever been."

Veney qualified No. 3 with a 5.59 at 264 mph and instead of racing No. 14 qualifier Wayne Butler (who crashed in qualifying) in the first round, took down alternate Jay Payne, the winningest alcohol driver now that many-time world champion Frank Manzo has retired. After overcoming an early lead by Dan Pomponio in round two, 5.61 to 5.88, Veney dispatched Paul Noakes in the semifinals with the team's best run of the event, a 5.57.

Cox's car broke on the burnout in the final round, paving the road to the winner's circle for the Permatex/Follow A Dream team. The afterglow won't last long, though - the next race, the Route 66 Nationals, is this weekend in Chicago.

The SummitRacing.com Nationals from Norwalk, Ohio will be televised this Sunday, July 12, at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

Blown Engine Sidelines Permatex/Follow A Dream Team

Courtesy of Follow A Dream Inc.

Marstons Mills, MA-April 1, 2015-Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team qualified in the fast half of the field at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, as it has at every race this season, but didn't get a chance to parlay that performance into a deep run in eliminations when an engine explosion on the final qualifying attempt knocked the team out of the race.

"It wasn't tuneup-related," Blake said. "It was a parts failure. The spark plugs looked like they'd never been run, and the computer showed that everything was perfect until a connecting rod broke. It's a tough way to lose, and we just missed getting everything back together in time to make it to the lanes for first round."

After persistent rain Friday wiped out both scheduled qualifying sessions, driver Todd Veney ran a 5.57 at 262 mph Saturday morning. About three and a half seconds into what was going to be an even better run, a rod snapped and drove itself out the side of the block, setting off a chain reaction that ended when the supercharger backfired, blowing the burst panel out of the body and creating a mountain of work for the crew.

"I was already through the 'shake zone,' well into second gear and just about to hit high, when it blew up," Veney said. "It's a shame. We had low e.t. of the entire first session for the left lane, and the car wasn't that hopped up. [Tuner] Tom [Howell] got after it for the second session and the car responded. That was going to be within a hundredth of a second of our best run ever [5.52] until the rod broke."

The crew leaped into action as soon as the car returned to the pits and just missed completing the engine swap in time. A new engine was just coming to life in the pits when Veney's scheduled opponent, Gatornationals winner Ulf Leanders of Sweden, ran an on-and-off-the-throttle 6.07 to beat alternate Tyler Scott.

The next race is an East Regional April 24-25 at Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond, Va., where three years ago the Follow A Dream team set low e.t. and top speed and won the race.

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Back at Pomona for 1st Time in 5 Years

Courtesy of FollowADream.org

Marstons Mills, MA -November 13, 2014-Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team heads to the birthplace of drag racing, the Los Angeles area, for the final race of the 2014 season, the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., where the team was runner-up in 2005 and won it all in 2006. It's the first appearance in six weeks for the team, whose season was highlighted by victory at Lebanon Valley Dragway, where they scored for the second year in a row and the third time in five years.

"We've had some great moments at Pomona," said Blake, who spoke at the Veteran's Hospital in Long Beach, Calif., and at the Universal Technical Institute in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., earlier this week. "Permatex's sponsorship made it possible for us to bring Follow A Dream's message of the power of positive thinking and self-determination to veterans and to the students at UTI. I was part of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at UTI for their new veteran's building, and none of that would have been possible without Permatex's involvement with our team."

It also made possible a lifelong dream for driver Todd Veney, a Southern California native who's competing at the historic Pomona track for the first time ever. "The first national event I ever went to was right here at the Winternationals in 1972," he said. "I was born out here, lived here until I was 10, and moved right back out to L.A. the day after I graduated from college, and I've always wanted to race here."

Qualifying begins Thursday and concludes with two sessions on Friday. The first round is Saturday, and final eliminations are set for Sunday. The event will be televised on ESPN2 Nov. 23 at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Permatex Follow A Dream Team Out Early at Norwalk

Courtesy of Follow A Dream

Marstons Mills, MA -July 11, 2013-Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team moved up to fourth in the national standings despite an early exit at the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Driver Todd Veney qualified 13th with a 5.71 and lost in the first round when the engine went silent behind the line following the burnout.

"The team put in a brand-new engine for this race, and we finally got the new supercharger that Jay had on order a long time ago," Veney said. "We qualified only 13th but we were just a few hundredths of a second from being in the top four, so we were really looking for big things in eliminations. But then we got back to the pits and our whole weekend turned around."

Touring pros Khalid alBalooshi, Phil Shuler, and Stevie Jackson showed up in the Follow A Dream pit with nine-year-old Jacob Delling, who lost both of his eyes to retinal cancer and really wanted to meet Blake. "Spending time with Jacob was the highlight of the event for us," said Blake, who gave Jacob an extended tour of the trailer and the car, highlighted by seat time in the car, where Jacob familiarized himself with the controls and fell in love with the air-shift buttons.

"There will be other races," Blake said. "We've won before and we'll win again, but getting to spend time with someone like Jacob is what this team and Follow A Dream is all about. It was also great to see some folks from Permatex and TA/Petro this weekend. It's always nice to have guests of our sponsors enjoy a day at the track."

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Reaches Semis in 2013 Debut

Courtesy of Follow A Dream Motorsports

Marstons Mills, MA –February 19, 2013-Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car team tied for low e.t. and reached the semifinals in its season debut at the Eastern Region event in Gainesville, Fla., this weekend. Driver Todd Veney ran a 5.59 on the team's first run of the season, the best the car has run since the 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte last April, and tied Kris Hool for low e.t.

Veney defeated John Headley on a holeshot in the opening round of eliminations, 6.32 to 6.30, and fell to eventual winner Dan Pomponio in the semifinals. "Killer air and a cold track made it hard to get down the track after that first run, but a semifinal finish isn't too bad for our first race of the year," Veney said. "The best part was watching the crew swap engines between rounds and having the new one run just as good as the one that came out of the car."

A lifter broke in Veney's first-round race with Headley, which made the boost skyrocket and led to a supercharger explosion. "The whole team worked together to get it done in time, and a little rain delay didn't hurt," said Blake. "We figured the extra time we got from the rain was Tom Dobruck looking down on us."

The team received word over the weekend that Dobruck, a staple at Permatex for many years, had succumbed to cancer just before the event. "We raced with heavy hearts all weekend," Blake said, "and we're dedicating this whole season to Tom's memory."

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Wins Historic TAFC East Region Title

Courtesy of Follow A Dream

Marstons Mills, MA –November 16, 2012-Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team swept its last two races to win the 2012 East Region Top Alcohol Funny Car championship, overcoming a midseason slump that made the title seem out of reach. Driver Todd Veney qualified No. 1 and set low e.t and top speed en route to victory in Richmond, Va., in April, and closed the regional season with back-to-back wins in Cecil County, Md., and Bowling Green, Ky., both over perennial championship contender Mickey Ferro in the final.
"We weren't even following the points anymore at one point, but there was no chance if we didn't beat leader John Anderika in the semi's at Cecil County," Veney said. "That one and the final against Mickey took us from fourth to first, and winning Bowling Green just about locked it up. It was a total team deal – both times, the crew came up with our best run all weekend in the final."
"This is a perfect example of the power of positive thinking, determination, and teamwork – the things I talk about every day at Follow A Dream," Blake said. "For a long time, it looked like we were out of it, and we end up with three wins, the most we've ever had in a season. To think that we're the first team other than Frank Manzo's and Bob Newberry's in the 32-year history of Top Alcohol Funny Car to win this championship...it's still hard to believe."

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Heads to Maple Grove for Season Finale

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marstons Mills, MA - Fresh off back-to-back victories at regional events and consecutive semifinal finishes in national event competition, Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car team heads to Maple Grove Raceway for the final race of the season, the Auto Plus Nationals. In each of the last two years, driver Todd Veney made his quickest run ever in the first round of eliminations at this event – 5.549 in 2010 and 5.548 last year.

"I'm excited about this race," said Blake, who will be in the area days in advance to speak to students at the Universal Technical Institute. "The weather's supposed to be good this year, and we're looking forward to another great weekend. It's really been a good year, and we want to end it on a great note."

Qualifying sessions are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday and 1:30 Saturday, and the first round of eliminations is slated to go off at 4:30 Saturday afternoon. The event will be televised on ESPN2 Sunday, October 14 at 2 p.m. Eastern.

"The air is usually killer at Maple Grove at this time of the year, so maybe we can run another all-time best this year," Veney said. "We won our last race in 2012 and got runner-up at the last one of 2011, so hopefully we can close the year out with another win."

Follow A Dream Team Reaches the Semi's at Indy

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marstons Mills, MA –September 11, 2012 - Following back-to-back victories in Cecil County, Md., and Bowling Green, Ky., Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team reached the semifinals at the biggest race of the year, the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Driver Todd Veney qualified No. 6 in a field of 24 Top Alcohol Funny Cars and defeated East Coast rival Paul Gill and upstart John Hart before falling in the semifinals to eventual winner Chris Foster.
"I really want to thank the team for all the sacrifices they made to come back for the rain date," said Blake. "Everybody gave up a lot and rearranged their schedule to fill in for the guys who couldn't miss work, and it paid off. Indy's the biggest race there is, and we were still in it late on Sunday afternoon."
Veney was No. 1 in the field until the very end of the opening qualifying session with a 5.65, the team's best run since a low e.t. 5.60 at Richmond in April. After surviving a close call in the first round against Gill when both cars got within inches of the centerline and Gill eventually crossed it, Veney beat Hart in the quarterfinals, 5.77 to 5.95, and lost to Foster in the semi's, 5.60 to 5.69.
"Indy's my home track, and that's the best we've ever done there," Veney said. "Getting down to the final four cars at a race like that is something I'll remember forever, and it really helps us in the points." With the semifinal finish, the team is back in the top 10 in the national standings and remains number 1 in the East Region, 33 points ahead of many-time national and divisional champion Frank Manzo.
The event will be televised on ESPN2 this Sunday at 3 p.m. Eastern.
This weekend, the Permatex/Follow A Dream team will compete at the O'Reilly Auto Parts Nationals in Charlotte, where in April Veney ran a career-best 5.52 at 262 mph. Qualifying sessions are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Friday and 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Eliminations begin Saturday afternoon at 5:00.
For those not in attendance, Blake will be featured on National Public Radio's "Only A Game" radio magazine this Saturday at 7 a.m. and again Saturday at 7 p.m. "Only A Game" is a nationally syndicated weekly sports magazine hosted by veteran NPR commentator Bill Littlefield. Jay Blake: Man on a Mission

Courtesy of the Pro Sportsman Association
Photos courtesy of David Smith

Jay Blake has never let a little thing like not being able to see slow him down. Blinded in an industrial accident in May 1997, he has gone on to accomplish things that he might never have if he was just another mechanic and drag racer, things like inspiring thousands and changing people's lives.
About the only thing the eternal optimist from Cape Cod, Mass., can't do is drive his race car, which is fine with him – he never wanted to anyway. "The dream was never about driving," Blake says. "It was always about working on the car." He does more than just work on a race car, though; he's the crew chief and owner of the Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car, and for him, drag racing isn't a hobby. It's who he is and what he does.
When he's not leading his team at events across North America or helping prepare his car for the next race, Blake demonstrates the power of positive thinking, determination, and teamwork – the foundation of Follow A Dream, the non-profit organization he formed in the late 1990s – through speaking engagements before tens of thousands of people at sponsor displays, vocational and technical schools, and corporate/business gatherings.
"Speaking is just as rewarding as racing," says Blake, who has been featured on CNN and the Today Show and in the New York Times and the Boston Globe. "In some ways, it's more rewarding. I used to get nervous, and every once in a while I still do, but I enjoy it. I guess it's like driving: It's not something you just show up and do; you need to take time to get your head together and get psyched up. I like big groups the best. I'd rather speak to 500 people than 20 because I draw on the energy in the room. Sometimes, I can hear people's reaction, and when there's total silence, it speaks volumes."
Blake's story is a powerful one. He teetered on the brink of death following an industrial accident when he was 30 and woke up to find that he'd lost his vision and his sense of taste and smell. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, he made the difficult decision to not just go on but to lead a life that convinced others that their dreams were closer to their grasp than they realized.

"People limit themselves so much," he says. "We don't look hard enough at what the possibilities are. If I could see, I'd be just another guy with an Alcohol Funny Car. Doing this full time makes me different from other racers. Plus, let's face it: my story is different than the next guy's." Practicing what he preached, Blake formed his own race teams, first in Super Comp, now in Alcohol Funny Car, and, in the future, with a nitro car on the NHRA Full Throttle tour.
"For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to work on a fuel team," he says. "No one was ever going to hire me, so I figured the only way to do it was to start my own team. I was going to go get 3 million bucks and have my own car, which, obviously, wasn't realistic, so I went with what I knew, Super Comp, which I could afford. Only there would be 120 cars at every race, I blended in with everybody else, and I realized that I was never going to get any real sponsorship."
It had to be fuel racing or alcohol racing. "I figured, 'The heck with it. I'm lucky to be alive. What do I have to lose?' I'd already gone through a divorce. The things that I had were family, friends, and kids, and they weren't going anywhere. If I lost my house, it was only a house, and I could just go live somewhere else. I can't do that now – I'm remarried and have more kids and more responsibilities – but decided I was going for it. It was just my brother, Jimmy, and me in the beginning, and a lot of great people have been there along the way. It's still that way, and I thank every person who's volunteered and every sponsor who's been a part of it, especially Permatex."

Blake bought Frank Manzo's championship-winning Dodge Avenger before the 2003 season, and just two years later, driver Dave Ray wheeled it to the team's first national event victory, over Bob Newberry at the 2005 Houston event. Ray won the 2006 Gatornationals, where tuner Tom Howell guided the car to the No. 1 qualifying spot (5.57) and low e.t. (5.56), and finished the year with a victory at the Finals in Pomona. Current driver Todd Veney has won three divisional events since 2010.
"That first win at Houston was incredible, and the Gatornationals and the World Finals are two of the biggest races in the world, but the most rewarding part of all this is when you realize that you've actually made a difference in people's lives," Blake says. "When you hear that you've changed someone's life, changed the way they view things…nothing is ever going to take the place of that. I don't look in the rear view mirror too much. You need to look back sometimes and be proud of what you've accomplished and realize that what you're doing is working, but you always have to keep going. As I tell people sometimes at my speaking engagements, you don't have to get hit in the head as hard as I did to wake up and follow your dreams."

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Opens 2012 Season With Quarterfinal Finish

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marston Mills, MA - Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team reached the quarterfinals in its 2012 debut, dropping a close match with John Lombardo Jr., 5.64, 254 to 5.69, 237.

At the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla., driver Todd Veney qualified in the fast half of the field with a 5.60 at 257 mph and defeated Cassie Simonton in the first round with an identical 5.60 at 257 mph. "The team was right back up to speed immediately," Blake said. "We didn't test in the preseason, and the car was in the 5.60s right off the bat, which comes from having the same crew in place from last year. Everybody did their jobs perfectly, but two $10 parts failed and cost us the race."

The rear two blower studs snapped 3.2 seconds into Veney's second-round matchup with Lombardo, slowing the car by 20 mph and turning what would have been a 5.55 win into a 5.69 loss. "When that happens, it cuts the boost in half," Veney said. "I can't believe it went as fast as it did - the studs broke before half-track, and it felt like it was barely moving. I never saw him until the very end. I actually thought we had him, but he passed me as we were coming up on the first mile-per-hour light. The good thing is that the car ran strong. We tested after the race, and it ran even better."

On Monday afternoon, after the last two rounds of the rain-delayed event were complete, the team tested ideas that tuner Tom Howell developed over the winter and made runs of 5.61 and 5.58.

The next race on the Permatex/Follow A Dream schedule is the 4-Wide Nationals April 13-15 at zMax Dragway in Charlotte, N.C. Gatornationals coverage will be televised on ESPN2 this Saturday, March 24, at noon Eastern.

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Wraps Up 2011 With Another Final

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marstons Mills, MA -- October 18, 2011- With a final-round appearance at the last race of the year, Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team climbed to sixth in the national Top Alcohol Funny Car standings. Driver Todd Veney qualified second at the Division 2 Lucas Oil Series closer at Silver Dollar Raceway with a 5.66 and dropped a close final to Mickey Ferro, the second-ranked driver in the country last season, 5.64 to 5.73.

Veney had low e.t. of the two previous rounds, with a 5.69 win over Melinda Green-King and a 5.65 against Mark Billington, knocking both out of the Division 2 championship battle won by Ferro. "Hopefully this locks up a spot for us in the Top 10," Blake said. "If it does, it'll be the first time we've done it two years in a row. The car ran well all weekend, but in the final the track was a little better than we thought."

It was the team's first appearance at the Reynolds, Ga. facility. "This was a good way to end a good season," Veney said. "It really helped us in the national standings and almost was enough to get us second in the division." With 267 points apiece, Veney and Eric Lourie tied for second behind Frank Manzo in Division 1, but Lourie won the tiebreaker.

The Follow A Dream team finishes the 2011 season with a 21-13 record (.618 winning percentage) and five final round appearances - one at a national event, one at the Jegs Allstars race, and three in divisional competition.

"The best part is that every single member of the team is going to be back for 2012," Blake said. "I thank every one of them - Tom Howell, Todd Veney, Ed Parker, Scott Osborn, Scott Spencer, Joe Connelly, Charlie Connelly, Maura McGonigle, and Alan Hadfield - for the hard work and dedication that made this a good year for our team."

Permatex/Follow A Dream Team Eyes Top Five Heading into Reynolds

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marstons Mills, MA -- October 12, 2011- Racing to get back in the top five in national standings, Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream crew heads to tiny Reynolds, Georgia, for the team's final race of the year, the Lucas Oil Series event at Silver Dollar Raceway. It'll be the first start ever at the Division 2 track for the team and driver Todd Veney.

"We're all looking forward to it," said Veney, currently ninth in the NHRA national Top Alcohol Funny Car rankings. "Sometimes, that last race can be good to you. We've won a couple of them, including last year at Atco, and the way the car was running at Maple Grove, I think we're ready to race anywhere,"

With a career-best 5.54 and two 5.56s, the team reached the semifinals two weeks ago at the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway. "It was great to be back in the late rounds," Blake said. "We want to make sure we finish in the top 10 in the country again, and maybe even get back in the top five,"

Qualifying sessions are scheduled for 12:15 and 3 p.m. Saturday, and eliminations kick off that night at 6.

Permatex/Follow a Dream Team Back On Track With Semifinal Finish

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marstons Mills, MA – October 5, 2011-With a career-best performance, Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream team reached the Top Alcohol Funny Car semifinals in its first national event appearance since the Chicago event in July. At the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway, driver Todd Veney made three consecutive runs in the 5.50s, including a career-best 5.548, and advanced to the semifinals, where he fell to Frank Manzo, who clinched the national championship with a world-record run.
"We've got our race car back," Blake said. "The car made a solid run right out of the box, and it just got better from there."
Veney ran a 5.68 off the trailer, followed by a 5.66 and, in the final qualifying session, a 5.56 at 260 mph, the team's best run since the Charlotte event in April. In the first round, Veney recorded a 5.548, bettering the 5.549 the team ran in the same round of the same race last year, in a win over Division 1 rival Eric Lourie.

A 5.56 in the quarterfinals took care of veteran Dan Pomponio, setting up a match with Manzo, who needed to win that round to clinch his record 15th championship. Veney lost traction not far off the line and Manzo advanced with a 5.411.

"It was great to be back in the 5.50s again," Veney said. "So many little things have bitten us in the last few races, but no one on this team ever doubted that we'd be back, and now we are."

Television coverage of the event will be on ESPN2 Sunday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m.

The team's final race of the season will be at the Division 2 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga., Oct. 15-16. Veney remains ninth in the national standings, but is just two rounds out of the top five.

Permatex/Follow a Dream Team DNQ's at Englishtown

Courtesy of Jay Blake

Marstons Mills, MA - September 15, 2011 - Jay Blake's Permatex/Follow A Dream Top Alcohol Funny Car team endured a third straight disappointing outing as driver Todd Veney missed the cut at the final Division 1 Lucas Oil Series event of the season.

At Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., where last year the team reached the final, Veney shook the tires in the first qualifying session and went up in smoke right off the line in the only other session for a second DNQ in the team's last three starts. On the first attempt, Veney got back in the throttle after shaking the tires at the top of low gear, and it's a good thing he did because opponent Melinda Green-King was all over both lanes and surely would have hit the Permatex car had Veney been coasting.

"It probably looks like we're completely lost because we haven't done well at three races in a row," Veney said, "but I don't think we are. It was something different all three times."

"We need to get this thing figured out - and we will," Blake said. "There's no way this car should be running like this, and we'll be testing at New England Dragway before our next event in Reading."

While it was a difficult weekend, the team was honored with the Best Appearing Crew for the special "Free to Dream" shirts they wore commemorating the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States.
