TAN Driver Blog-Megan McKernan-TAD

What an amazing weekend the Darien Racing team had in Phoenix at the Division 7 opener. It was also the very first Western Regional race for the alcohol classes. But most importantly, the weekend marked a first for me; I made it to the winner's circle for the very first time. Of course, we made it there as a team. Everyone else had been there before in one form or another, whether as a driver, crew member, team owner or crew chief. Yes, as you can tell I am lucky to have such a talented team. This was special, because I was able to share my first win with the best team a driver could ever hope for. Special too because we are not just a team, but we are a family.

It was a rematch of sorts for out team, as we faced Joey Severance in the final round, just as we did last season at the Seattle National. Joey came up on the winning end of that first matchup on his way to securing a Division 6 championship. The Severance family team is tough, and we knew that even with the great car we had in Phoenix it would not be an easy battle. When that win light came on in my lane, I was ecstatic! The happiness and excitement soon turned to overwhelming emotion of course by the time I climbed out of the car and waited for the team to make their way down the return road. I could not wait to see their faces and give all of them a hug.

There are so many people to thank and acknowledge, it's difficult to know where to begin. I want to start with my parents, for sending me to Frank Hawley's in 2003 to get my super comp license, and for all of their love and support along the way. I would not be here now in my racing career if it weren't for Roger "R.C." Conley, my teacher and crew chief in super comp for eight years, and one of my best friends. He believed in me when many others did not. Unfortunately, he is not with us today, but I carry his photo in the dragster and I know he was with me on Sunday. I have to thank John Force and Robert Hight for the support and advice they have given me over the years. I owe the win to my team: Jerry and Debbie Darien, Casey Grisel, Geoff Monise, Howard Mazei and Tom Gatlin. Not only do they work their butts off weekend after weekend but they have been there to teach, encourage, support and instill confidence in me. I am also grateful for the support of my sister Shannon, my uncle Steve, and the rest of my family and friends who have been on this journey with me.

I also want to thank Truck-Lite and Davco for this our second year of sponsorship. The following companies need to be thanked as well: Midnight Impressions, Gasparrelli Printing, Cucamonga Brewery, Safety Kleen, Mahle, Specialty Fasteners, Broguiere's Dairy, Comp Cams, Moroso, Control Cables, Simpson, Castrol, VP Racing Fuels, Taylor Motorsports Products, Goodyear, XRP, Hedman, Cam Effects, BAE, ISC Racers Tape, Goodson, Jegs, Lenco, Clark Copper Head Gaskets, Weld Wheels, Mageira Wings, Molinari Clutches, Hogan's Manifolds, Strange Engineering, McKinney Corp., Bill Miller Eng., Paul Stoll PPG Paint, ISP Safety, Racepak, Horsepower Engineering, and MSD.

Our next two races will be the Las Vegas Divisional and National events in March. Like always, I cannot wait to get back in the car. Our team has so much fun together, and I love the Vegas track!

TAN Driver Blog-Jeff Ashwell-TAFC

The Emmy's are over, as well as the Super Bowl, Grammy's, Oscar's, two NHRA national events and numerous Lucas Oil divisionals, but we still have roughly 8-10 weeks before we even start to see the quarter mile. The team and I have been steadily getting the car back together piece by piece and once the weather starts to get better up here in Oregon, we should start testing by late April.

We are fairly fortunate to have all but one team member live within 2 miles of the shop, so if something needs to be done quickly, there is always a helping hand nearby. We are also blessed to have had the same guys on the crew for many, many years now as well. Myself and Todd Ashwell are brothers, with Greg Ashwell being our father. Isaac Bese and Scottie McDonald have known our family for well over 15 years and Ray Graham is our longtime next door neighbor. We all work very well with each other and we have a lot of fun when out here racing. I must say there is never a dull moment with these guys. We make the most of what we have funding and parts wise, but also how we entertain ourselves during those dreaded rain delays, and that's how it should be, I feel. Why come out and race if you're not having a good time?

Last year was a little stressful with the car not responding how we wanted it to and with Norm being sick, but we still found the time to sit back, relax, laugh and enjoy the time we got to spend with our racing friends and family. On a different note, I've been asked to do a live call-in radio show with San Diego Motorsports KCQB 1170am next Sunday, March 4th, at 9pm. Not 100% sure of the format or what kind of topics they will ask about, but any chance that we can get to spread the word about the fun, family atmosphere of Top Alcohol racing and our race team, we'll take it. That's it for now and don't forget to tune in next Sunday at 9pm. See you at the races.

McKernan, Lombardo Win Phoenix Regional

Courtesy of Pro Sportsman Association

With a 5.37 in the final round against 2011 championship contender Joey Severance, Megan McKernan earned the first Top Alcohol Dragster victory of her young career at the Lucas Oil Series West Region opener at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, reigning Division 7 champion John Lombardo edged Jay Payne, the driver he battled for the division title all last season, in a close final, 5.64 to 5.68.

"I was a little nervous, but I knew we had a car that could win," said McKernan, driver of Jerry Darien's Truck-Lite/Davco A/Fuel Dragster. "We've had a car capable of winning since the end of last year, and I just wanted to make sure I didn't mess anything up. Jerry told me not to think of it as a final, to think of it as the fifth qualifying session, and it worked."

Severance, known for .00 lights (including two at the Winternationals), got off the mark first, but McKernan took over in the last eighth mile, 5.37, 265 to 5.48, 261. "I noticed him moving out ahead of me somewhere around half-track, but then I blasted past him," she said. "This is a huge relief. Jerry knows I put a lot of pressure on myself and I tend to over-think things. He has confidence in me and says I need to have more confidence in myself, and after this, I do."

Severance reached the final after qualifying on the bump and taking out No. 1 qualifier Chris Demke, who had back-to-back 5.33s in qualifying, in a close race in round one, 5.43 to 5.44. McKernan eliminated Johnny Ahten in round one and singled in the semifinals when Canadian Don St. Arnaud was unable to return.

McKernan, 32, a market-research project manager for SEMA, joins a list of future Top Fuel and Funny Car national event winners who first won races driving Darien's cars: Gary Scelzi, Brandon Bernstein, Morgan Lucas, Frank Pedregon, and Melanie Troxel.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Lombardo's NAPA/Lucas Oil Monte Carlo and Payne's Fire Ice Mustang were locked together from the outset, tying for the qualifying lead with identical 5.615s in the opening session. Payne got the No. 1 spot on the basis of his faster speed (260.11 mph to Lombardo's 250.09) and reset low e.t. to 5.612 in a first-round win over Steve Griboski. Payne also had a slightly quicker e.t. (5.64) in his semifinal win over 2003, 2004, and 2008 Phoenix winner Doug Gordon than Lombardo did (5.65) in taking out many-time national event champ Brian Hough in that round, but Lombardo had the edge in the final.

Both drivers had their best reaction times and slowest runs of the event, and Lombardo prevailed, 5.71, 257 to 5.80, 252. It was the second year in a row that Payne was runner-up here. Last year, he qualified in one shot and put together a string of 5.50s before losing in the final to Sean O'Bannon, who drove the same car and had the same crew chief, Jeff Lirones, that Lombardo had this year.

"To me, getting to race somebody like Jay Payne in a final round is what the class is all about," said Lombardo, who won for the fifth time in his three-year career, including the 2009 national event in Dallas. "You've got Doug Gordon and Shane Westerfield and Steve Gasparrelli and Brian Hough -- some of the best racers in the country -- out here in the west. The depth of talent is unbelievable. But Payne, he's up there with Frank Manzo, Mickey Ferro, and Tony Bartone -- the guys who are in the top five in the country year after year after year. To beat somebody like him was a real thrill."

Ahten Ready to Put on a Good Show at Phoenix Regionals

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Phoenix, AZ -- Johhny Ahten is going into show business. This weekend at the opening of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Firebird Raceway, Ahten has added a top hat and cane to his Top Alcohol Dragster act. Not to worry, he will still wear his firesuit and helmet when he is racing. Ahten and his Island Renovations/801 Racing Dragster are ready to put on a show for the fans, and the fellow racers. Welcome my friends to the Nitro show that never ends.

"The Regionals are like a mini national event now," said Ahten. "Instead of just a few cars here, there are Division 7 leaders as well as a few Division 6 runners."

Ahten brings the knowledge and data accumulated a few weeks ago at the Pomona event. Crew chief Al Ahten has the Nitromethane injected tune-up calculated and dialed in. It's up to Johhny Ahten to step into the spotlight and demonstrate what the car is capable of. Every now and again, Ahten's car is prone to attempting a high wire act when it launches the front wheels skyward.

"It's a wild ride to balance the wheelie," added Ahten. "On the rear win it says "Stump Puller," and it has truly earned the nickname."

Riding along with the front wheels in the air are associate sponsors Island Renovations and 801 Racing 70Wt Oil with CleanBoost Technology. Also hanging on for dear life are NGK sparkplugs, FireIce, Stith Printing, and Hedman Hedders.

Johhny Ahten is looking forward to donning his top hat and cane (firesuit and helmet), entering the spotlight, and running the show of shows. Most of all, Ahten wants to show his wheelie bars to a few fellow racers while traveling down the track.

Demke Brings the Big Mo to Phoenix Regionals

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Phoenix, AZ -- Momentum is defined as a strength or force gained by motion or by a series of events. After taking the Top Alcohol Dragster win in Pomona, Chris Demke and his Peen Rite Team are bringing that momentum into the Regional race at Firebird Raceway this weekend. The Regional event in Phoenix is the first in the newly formed racing series that replaced the divisional system.

"It allows us to go to more national events, which is good for us," said Demke. "It also means more competitors."

The Regional race will have the heavy hitters in attendance. That sits fine with the Maddern Racing team, as they won here from 2004-2006. The car has been serviced and the trailer loaded with more 801 Racing Oil with CleanBoost Technology. After a bit of tire shake, the RacePak computer has a few new connectors. The car is ready to race, and the Peen Rite Team can't wait to get it back in motion.

"I like Phoenix," added Demke. "We have a good tune up for the track and we are ready to see what the car can do."

The Peen Rite/801 Racing Team's momentum on the track has carried over to other areas. The Maddern Racing FaceBook page has gained a few hundred likes since the beginning of the season. The word is getting out there, and the success on the drag strip is the reason. Now it's time to ride the waves of momentum at the desert track in Phoenix. Surf's up!

Greg Hunter to Make TAD Debut

Courtesy of NVW Motorsports Promotion

CHANDLER, Az. -- After a long off-season preparing for 2012, Kenny Gilmour Motorsports is ready to take on the competition with new driver Greg Hunter. ExactAir Compliance Systems will be the primary backer of the Calgary, Alberta, Canada-based Top Alcohol Dragster team.

"I am very excited for the opportunity to join this team," said Hunter. "It is easy to get excited to drive this car by the enthusiasm and desire to win of everyone on this team. They truly have what it takes to field a competitive car and I think I will learn a lot from this group. My wife, Staci, and I are looking forward to the first race in Phoenix!"

Greg Hunter has been racing down the quarter-mile since 1994, first with a stock Ford Mustang GT. His desire for speed moved him up to a Super Comp dragster, which he drove for several years with great success. Hunter attended Frank Hawley's Drag Racing School in 2003, where he earned his Top Alcohol Funny Car license. This prompted Greg to build a Ford Mustang Top Alcohol Funny Car powered by a Boss Ford engine. 2012 is Greg Hunter's first year in Top Alcohol Dragster competition.

Kenny Gilmour is the team owner and crew chief for the 3,000 horsepower blown alcohol dragster. Gilmour has been involved in the sport since the 1960s, racing nitro fuel altereds, dragsters and Pro Comp funny cars. Kenny has also machined and assembled engines for cars on the street and the strip.

ExactAir Compliance Systems is a company that supplies Natural Gas emission compliance, maintenance and control systems. For more information on ExactAir's state of the art technology for the Natural Gas industry, visit them on the web at: http://www.exactairsystems.com/.

Greg Hunter and the ExactAir Top Alcohol Dragster will start off their 2012 quest for the championship at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 7 race at Firebird International Raceway, February 25-26. Joining Hunter and Kenny Gilmour will be crew members Cal Bellamy, Gary Savage, John Leach, Dell Lloyd, and Darlene Gilmour.

Greg Hunter and Kenny Gilmour Motorsports would like to thank the following marketing partners for their support: ExactAir Compliance Systems Inc, Omega 2000 Cribbing, Dark Side Racing, Goodyear Tire, Mopac Auto Supply, GRP Connecting Rods, Winberg Crankshafts, Lucas Oil, National Transmission, Paron Paint and Body, Mechanix Wear, Berube Custom Tanks, Peter Vaughn Custom Glass, NGK Spark Plugs, Koolsville Golf Carts and Accessories, VP Racing Fuels USA, Top Gun Coatings, Rock Bit Industries, and JE Pistons.

Hool Wins Gainesville Regional: TAD Final Postponed

Courtesy of the Pro Sportsman Association

Wyoming's Kris Hool collected the first regional win of 2012, stopping perennial championship contender Mickey Ferro in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final at the rain-plagued Eastern Regional event in Gainesville, Fla. Top Alcohol Dragster remains undecided; rain and high winds kept Rich McPhillips and Mark Taliaferro from meeting in the final, which will be contested next month in Gainesville during qualifying for the Gatornationals.

Hool drove his and brother Kevin's Gripper Hand Cleaner Monte Carlo to a 5.71 at 253 mph to stop Ferro, the reigning Gatornationals champion, whose Ryco-sponsored entry trailed with a close 5.78 at 251 mph. "It was a great race between two of the top 10 cars in the country last year," said Hool, who scored for third time in his career, including his national event victory last season in Brainerd and a divisional win in Bradenton, Fla.

With a telepathic .002 reaction time, Hool had the lead from start to finish. "I didn't mean to cut it that close," he said. "It was totally dark when we ran the final, and everybody sees the Tree better at night. I study drivers, and Mickey's definitely one of the best leavers out there. He's usually in the .030s or .040s, so I knew I had to be on it. We both probably should have run a lot better. Last year, the track here was slippery and no one was getting down it, but this year the track was excellent. Kevin said that we definitely could have run in the .60s, but a .71 was enough to get the job done."

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Taliaferro and McPhillips were just two of numerous drivers to run in the 5.30s. Semifinalist Sidnei Frigo never ran slower than 5.36 all weekend and barely lost to Taliaferro, the No. 1 qualifier, in the semifinals, 5.32 to 5.34. McPhillips topped former Division 1 champion Dan Mercier in the other semifinal match, 5.35 to 5.38, and killed the Tree all weekend with a .003 reaction time in the opening round and a .019 against Mercier.

Defending national champ Duane Shields is off to a frustrating start in defense of his title. After smoking the tires right off the line at the season-opening Winternationals, he did the same here opposite Frigo.

Next up on the regional schedule is this weekend's event at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix, which is expected to draw top teams from across the western United States.

Shields Earns JEGS Allstars Spot at Gainesville

Courtesy of Rich Bailey

Even with the 2012 NHRA drag racing season in full swing it's still winter as rain greeted the opening Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series regional event in Gainesville, Florida. The unpredictable weather took its toll on the event schedule but the rain let up in time to get the race underway. This event was important to Duane Shields and the Shortline Express team to qualify at since an invitation to the JEGS Allstar race could be clinched providing they were able to get their A/Fuel Dragster in the tough eight car field.

In the first qualifying session, Duane qualified in the fifth position with a 5.46 at 257 MPH. In the second and final qualifying round, Duane stayed in the fifth position even though he improved with a quicker 5.37 at 270 MPH. In round one, Duane met up with Florida's Sidnei Frigo. At the hit, Duane lost traction right away and the race was over just as quickly as it began. The car smoked the tires and Frigo was long gone.

It was a difficult loss for the Nevada based team but they came away with a lock on the JEGS Allstar race in Chicago. Also, they found a few clues as to why the car has not been performing to its full potential. "The beginning of the year has been a challenge to win a round. It makes last year great to think of. But we have figured a couple issues out and we'll get those fixed in time for the Gatornationals. Plus, we locked up the Division 2 Allstar spot" Duane Shields said.

The team will now regroup and fix the problems identified before returning to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, March 8-11. Duane would like to thank his sponsors GRP Connecting Rods, Molinari Race Products and NGK Spark Plugs for their support.

Ahten's Short Winternationals a Matter of Numbers

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Johhny Ahten doesn't need a slide ruler or protractor to know how to tune his Nitromethane Injected Top Alcohol Dragster. He does rely on the people that support him and the Ahten Racing Team. This past weekend, at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals, Ahten did get closer to the tune up he is looking for.

"We are inching away at the tune-up," said Ahten. "We just didn't compensate enough on Saturday to make past that round." Ahten and his Island Renovations/801 Racing dragster qualified in the number seven slot after running a 5.472/261.37 in Friday's second session. That led to a round one match up match up with Larry Miersch. Johnny ended up losing that round, and it was more like feet than inches.

"The track was good," said Ahten. "We just had it set a little too lean. And it may be a motorsports cliche, but we know what it did wrong, and we know how to fix it," added Ahten.

Associate sponsor Island Renovations knows all about fixing things. The Hawaiian home improvement company owned by crew member Howard Katano specializes in baths, kitchens, and door/window replacement. Something that does not need fixing is Fireman's Brew. The promotional partner garnered a huge amount of attention in the Ahten pits and quenched a few thirsty race fans after the race. Many of the folks involved with Fireman's Brew stopped by to visit with Johhny, answer questions from fans and other racers, and handed out some information about the California based beer.

"The entire Fireman's Brew team was super excited to be partnered up with the Johnny Ahten Racing team," said Chris Allender of Fireman's Brew. "The guys that made it out to the races from Fireman's Brew, including myself, had such an awesome experience! The Ahten Crew wearing our Fireman's Brew Ball caps out to the race track was really cool to see," added Allender.

They were not the only ones out at the track to see Johnny and the team. There was a big turnout of off-duty Firefighters, looking at Johnny's dragster and wanting to know where they could buy some Fireman's Brew. Also in attendance were 801 Racing's Tommy Parish and John Hill. They shot some video and got to know the whole Ahten Racing family.

"I am so happy to be associated with 801 Racing," said Ahten. "Their Revvolution 70W Oil with CleanBoost Technology gives us the confidence to get after it when we need to. I also want to thank Hedman Hedders and NGK spark plugs for their continued support," added Ahten.

The opening race of the 2012 NHRA season demonstrated that Johhny Ahten and his team have a viable support system in place. With the measure of support to lean on, the team can now richen up the tune-up, calculate their strategy, and get on with the racing season's numbers game.

Fireman's Brew grew out of their vision to create premium ales and lagers that would quench their thirst after an exhausting day on the fire line. Originally created by firefighters for firefighters, Fireman's Brew is now available in both bottles and kegs for retail and on-premise sales. Visit them at http://www.firemansbrew.com/

Chris Demke and 801 Racing Team Up for Winternationals Win

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Pomona, Ca -- Chris Demke, driver of the 801 Racing sponsored dragster, capped off a team effort in winning the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals this past weekend. Demke not only won the trophy, but in the final round, he ran the quickest elapsed time of the race with a stout 5.28 @ 270 mph.

"It was a great win, and having the guys from 801 Racing there made it even better," said Demke. "I am very happy to be continuing our relationship with 801 Racing and to be running the Revvolution Oil with CleanBoost Technology."

Demke's dragster was not the only car there running the Revvolution Oil this past weekend. Half of the cars in competition in the Alcohol Dragster class had 801 Racing's distinct red oil running through their engines. The company flagship was in attendance with the Cody Perkins entry. Fire Captain Johnny Ahten was blazing down the track, as well as Joey Severance. Two new cars were affixed with 801 Racing stickers in Garrett Bateman and Brooks Brown. In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Steve Gasparrelli was flying the colors. Moving up about 3000 horse power, John Lindsay's Nitro Funny Car with Team Driver James Day provided a strong testament to the engine saving properties of Revvolution Oil with CleanBoost Technology.

With all these cars running 801 Racing Oil, it was only fitting to have representation from the home office in Utah. John Hill and Tommy Parish made the trip down to Pomona to meet with the various teams, and take photos and shoot videos. Mostly they spread the word about 801 Racing's line of Fuel Treatments, Car Care Products, as well as answer technical questions about the Revvolution Oil.

"We are proud to be associated with so many teams that value the principle of family," said John Hill. "We felt right at home and we were so excited to be here for Chris Demke's big Winternationals win."

For many of the west coast racers, the regional races are next up February 23-24 in Phoenix, AZ. The teams are busy preparing for that race. 801 Racing's Revvolution Oil with CleanBoost Technology has made the drag racing community aware that no trophy is safe. Just ask 2012 Winternationals Champ Chris Demke.

Perkins Winternationals Experience a Battle

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Pomona, Ca -- Cody Perkins and the 801 Racing Top Alcohol Dragster Team did quite a bit of fighting at the Winternationals. Not fisticuffs mind you, but there were battles a plenty.

Trouble started brewing Monday night before the race, just as the team was set to depart. Perkins found one of their rocker assemblies had broken. The crack wasn't noticeable until the motor was completely assembled and the valve spring pressure was applied to the push rod cup. The first punch had been thrown. Perkins recovered, and with a right hook, replaced the faulty parts with their last remaining spare stand. So the crew jumped in the truck and headed to Pomona. Once they arrived, parts were awaiting that needed to be installed to get the car race ready. A flurry of rabbit punches followed, which were taken in stride and the work continued.

"We knew it was going to be a short field," said Perkins. "We had a few new things on the car and didn't need any carnage as we plan to attend quite a few races this season."

Qualifying was treated like a test session to feel out the car and track. They did not want to run the risk of hurting the limited supply of parts. Perkins dodged a few wild punches with the weather and tricky track conditions to qualify in the number eleven position. That meant a match up with number two qualifier Megan McKernan. That contest turned out to be the main event.

"Our 5.377 and my .017 light would've beat 9 out of the 11 other cars that round, including race winner Chris Demke and defending National champion Duane Shields," added Perkins. Unfortunately, neither of those competitors were in the other lane. It was Megan McKernan who produced the low ET and the top speed of the race up to that point against us. (5.306 @271.02)

Not a knockout punch, but Perkins was out of the game for the weekend. Cody and the 801 Racing Team is back in training for their next fight. With 801 Racing's Revvolution Oil with CleanBoost Technology in their corner, the team is ready for a prize winning fight.

Defending Champ Runs Well But Exits in First Round

Courtesy of Rich Bailey

NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster Champion Duane Shields had one of those weekends where the car ran well over all, but he had to be a little disappointed when eliminations rolled around on Saturday. Unfortunately, the defending Winternationals Champ suffered a first round loss.

Duane started the weekend off right by qualifying number one in the first stanza of qualifying with a 5.41 at 262 MPH. In round two of qualifying, Duane improved his time with a respectable 5.35 at 259 MPH blast but ended up third in the final qualifying order as two other teams had quicker times.

In round one, Duane Shields faced off with Brooks Brown. The two got into a long staging battle which resulted in Shields smoking the tires right off the starting line. "The staging battle didn't go our way but lessons learned for the future" Shields said.

From Pomona the Shortline Express team heads across the country to compete next weekend at the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Gainesville, Florida as they will devote much of their racing schedule to the east coast. The team also has a new crew chief as long time A/Fuel tuner and former car owner Mike Johnson joins the team. "Mike is now working with us so we have a great professional team" Duane said.

Duane would like to welcome new sponsors GRP Connecting Rods and Molinari Racing Products who join long time sponsor NGK Spark Plugs.

Demke and Team Peen Taste Sweet Victory at the Winternationals

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Pomona, Ca -- Chris Demke and the Peen Rite Top Alcohol Dragster Team went to the 2012 NHRA race season opener with a hunger. Their Winternationals victory turned out to be a feast. The sugared treat at the end was Demke's final round 5.281 @ 270.32. It was low ET of the event, and that has Demke and the Maddern Racing Team planning for the future.

"The win was so sweet, and the 5.28 was icing on the cake," said Demke. "There is no better way to start a season than with a win, and we have high hopes."

The race did not start out on such of a high point. Qualifying was a cat and mouse game with the weather related tune-up decisions. The short field and cooler temperatures was an invitation to turn the knobs up and go for the top time. The car was set on kill, but the track had other ideas. Ending up in the #4 qualifying position, the Peen Rite/801 Racing's future was not set.

First round tire shake against Garrett Bateman made the run interesting. Demke traded the lead back and forth, but pulled out the win. In the second round of eliminations, Demke was paired against Brooks Brown, who was being tuned by former Maddern Racing crewmember and good friend Adam Rhoades. The decision was made to turn the screws up, and the resulting 5.31 @ 270.97 gave them the victory. Third round's opponent, Megan McKernan, had the car to beat all weekend. After his burnout, Demke went to put the car in reverse and there was nothing. Demke started waving his hands as much as he could with the arm restraints. Crew members Ronald Mann, Kevin Watson, and Mike Demke got the car back to the starting line but time was running out. In their haste, the car was not lined up quite right in the groove. In the nick of time, the green light flashed and Demke was headed for the wall. A quick pedal job got the car back on track, but tire shake was also an issue. Once again Demke got on and off the throttle. Near the finish line Demke thought his day was over and got off the throttle. In a split second decision, he got back in it to make it a race. In the shutdown area, Demke thought he had lost because he had not seen the win light. When the Safety Safari crew waved him over to the ESPN cameras, only then did Demke realize he had won the round. Now it was on to the finals against Larry Miersch.

"Having been to eight finals without a win, I know to never take anyone lightly," said Demke. "We had confidence, but the car started off with some tire shake."

A close race at the start, Demke blasted down the quarter mile to a low elapsed time of 5.281 to take the Winternationals event win.

"It was a great win, and all what you hope for," said crewchief and car owner Jerry Maddern. "I expect to win, but it was a tough fight."

The race victory was shared with a few honored guests. Tommy Parish and John Hill of associate sponsor 801 Racing were lucky enough to enjoy a "winner, winner, BBQ chicken dinner" celebration with the team.

"It was great to get to know the families after a fantastic win," said Hill. "They are a fun group and we are super happy to be part of the team."

Chris Demke and his Peen Rite/801 Racing Team will savor this sweet victory only for a short time. Their next race will be February 23-24 in Phoenix, AZ at the regional event. Until then, the taste of chicken, sweet icing, and a Winternationals win be with them all.

Perkins is Ready for Season Opening Test at Pomona

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Pomona, Ca -- Cody Perkins comes to the Winternationals prepared to make the grade. Last year's season ending event did not exactly go as planned. The images of a wild ride filled with smoke and a banged up race car were replayed all winter long. Now that the 2012 NHRA season is here, Perkins is looking to create new memories from the Auto Club Raceway.

"The last time we were here at Pomona there was something exciting every time down the track," said Perkins. "We never had a boring run."

Cody and the 801 Racing Team are now looking for boring, as in boringly consistent quick trips down the quarter mile. The off season has allowed time to review and sharpen the lesson plan. They have studied last year's data, and are ready for the first exam of the new racing season.

"I am excited to once again be associated with 801 Racing in 2012," added Perkins. "Their new line of REVVOLUTION 70W Racing Oil with CleanBoost Technology, fuel and engine additives, and car care products has everyone talking."

This weekend at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals, Perkins and his 801 Racing dragster are on a mission to make the honor roll. They have traveled a long way to make a difference, and to create new memories. With little help from their study partners at 801 Racing, Cody Perkins and his team hope to get an A+ in Pomona History Class.

Ahten Brewing Up Something Special for Pomona

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Pomona, Ca -- Johnny Ahten's Nitromethane injected Top Alcohol Dragster has gained a few pounds over the long winters break. The car is now a few ounces heavier with the addition of some new stickers. Johnny, a Fire Department Captain, is proud to announce that he has added Fireman's Brew as a promotional partner. Fireman's Brew is a Brewing company created by two California Firefighters after battling a brushfire.

"I'm so excited to be working with Fireman's Brew this weekend," said Ahten. "Pomona has a real sense of family with all the fellow firefighters that come out for the race."

After the racing is finished for the day, thirsty race fans will have Fireman's Brew on their minds. It might be a Blonde (Pilsner style lager), or a Redhead (Amber Ale), or even a Brunette (Traditional German Style Double bock). One thing is for sure, there will be a few bottles picked up at Ralphs or Cost Plus by fans on their way home from Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Beer isn't the only thing Johnny Ahten has been brewing up during the offseason. 801 Racing have come aboard as an associate sponsor and it added another sticker to the side of the dragster. 801Racing's Revvolution Oil with CleanBoost Technology will assure crew chief Al Ahten can tune the car up and make the field take notice.

"The car likes Pomona," added Johnny Ahten. "Our career best here is a 5.25, and Pomona never scares me."

The Ahten Racing Team have a stick to it plan for the race, and the track. The expected cooler conditions play right into their strengths. Considered their home track, Ahten and the team are looking to start the 2012 NHRA season out the right way. There's something brewing at Pomona, and Johhny Ahten, Fireman's Brew, and 801 Racing Oil are the cause of it.

Demke Looking to Get it Started at the Winternationals

Courtesy of THR5 Communications

Pomona, Ca -- Chris Demke and the Maddern Racing Peen Rite sponsored Top Alcohol Dragster have waited long enough. Days have been marked off the calendar, parts ordered, cleaned, and massaged. Strategies have been mulled over and plans have been made. The winter layoff is over, and it's time to go racing. Thursday, February 9th is a day to celebrate as it marks the start of the 2012 racing season.

"Pomona is Drag Racing in Southern California," said Demke. "The season starts and ends here, which is something special. This is also our home track and I like racing here because friends and family can feel the thrill of Drag Racing."

Jerry Maddern and his Racing Team started racing at Pomona in 1993. At the 50th Anniversary race in 2010, Chris Demke notched his first National event win. He started out as a spectator at Pomona in 1971. This weekend, Demke is looking to leave a few others watching from the starting line.

"The conditions are conducive to fast times," said Demke. "We have our tune up in place and are looking to be in the 5.20's. I am happy to continue our relationship with Peen Rite," added Demke. "I am also excited to join the 801 Racing team in 2012."

With Peen Rite and 801 Racing Revvolution Oil with CleanBoost Technology aboard for 2012, Chris Demke, Kevin Watson and Hamburger Mike are ready, willing and able. This week, the air in Southern California will be filled with the sounds of superchargers, and the smells of race fuel and hot dogs. Look for Chris Demke; he'll be the guy with the big grin, and humming the words: "Let's Get It Started."

Sharp Dressed Team

In a time when major sponsors are few and far between, it's important to represent your supporters in the most professional way. The appearance of your crew is just as vital as the appearance of your car. Black t-shirts might hide the oil and dirt, but that's as exciting as a plain black car. Investing in sublimated crew shirts can really impress your current or potential sponsors. Shirts like the pros wear are more affordable than you might think.

Many of the major sublimated team shirt makers have a minimum order of 9 shirts. When you have 3 or 4 crew guys, what sense does it make to buy 9 or more shirts at $99+? North Carolina-based Radical Race Gear offers the same kind of shirts with no minimum shirt orders. Even better, they currently have a special going on.

"Our special offer right now is 1-5 shirts for $59 per shirt, 6-12 for $49, and 13 and up for $39. That's for all styles of our sublimated shirts; polos, button-downs, 1/4 zips, and women's v-necks. They're made of moisture wicking, stain resistant microfiber fabric. Also included in the special is half-price artwork fee," said Butch Lamb of Radical Race Gear.

Radical can provide you with a 100% custom design for your shirts, or you can submit your own artwork. Need your shirts in time for the Gatornationals? The turnaround time for shirts is around 21-30 days, so there is still time to get your order in.

Dressing your team in sublimated crew shirts can pay off. Radical Race Gear customers have won Best Appearing Crew awards in drag racing and circle track racing series. Having custom crew shirts can make or break sponsorship deals. Even if you don't have sponsors, sublimated crew shirts can show fans and potential sponsors that you run a professional operation. They make a great gift to give to sponsors to show their support of your race team too.

Interested in more information about how you can order your custom sublimated crew shirts? Visit Radical Race Gear on the web at http://www.radicalracegear.com/. While you're there, check out some of the other products that they offer, including radio systems and hero cards.

The 2011 season was awesome. Not only was it my first season racing a Top Alcohol Dragster, but we made it to two final rounds, had a perfect qualifying record for every national and divisional event we participated in and finished third in the Pacific Division.

I want to take a second to acknowledge my team, because of course without them I wouldn't be where I am. Jerry Darien, owner, teacher and crew chief; Debbie Darien, coordinator, parts cleaner and team mom; Geoff Monise, clutch; Howard Mazei, bottom end; Casey Grisel, heads, and I always say assistant crew chief J. Thanks guys for an awesome season. And thanks for putting up with me, having confidence in me and always making me laugh.

I earned my TAD license in April 2010, six and a half years after going through Frank Hawley's to get my super comp license. I have been racing super comp ever since, and all of the seat time in that car made for a relatively easy transition in the alcohol dragster. Not to mention, I have the best teacher in the alcohol ranks in Jerry Darien and the best crew anyone could ask for. Truck-Lite Company came on board as our primary sponsor in May of last year, and it has been a wonderful relationship. Truck-Lite is a top-notch company that manufactures the best heavy-duty lighting products in the industry. Probably most known for their stop-turn signals, they also manufacture forward lighting, mirrors and harnesses. If you have a chance, visit their website at http://www.truck-lite.com/ to learn more.

The off-season has been somewhat relaxing, but I have kept busy. Of course, I work fulltime at SEMA, so it's not as though I've been on vacation. I did have a few days off at Christmas and spent time with family. My dad, Robert Hight and I went trap and skeet shooting after Christmas, which has become sort of a tradition for us. My parents, the Dariens, the Hights and I also went to the Bob Seger concert at STAPLES Center. Wow, what a great concert! Of course we work on getting the car together for the season, and I practiced at the shop with our full-size tree that we can hook up directly to the car. Oh, and I replaced some old lights on the trailer with brand new Truck-Lite LEDs.

Last month, I traveled to Falconer, New York to visit Truck-Lite's headquarters for the first time. In two and a half days, I visited not only the headquarters and manufacturing plant there in Falconer, but also traveled to their plants in Pennsylvania. Truck-Lite manufactures everything but metal. That means the molds, the lenses, the circuit boards, are all designed and created there. I was able to see how the products are made, and had time to sign autographs and tell people about our team. I had an awesome time.

We are exactly one week away from the start of the 2012 season. Jerry, myself and the team are so ready to get started! We will be in Pomona with the Truck-Lite/Davco dragster and hope to walk away with my first Wally. I ran a career-best pass at the Auto Club Finals in November of 5.31 at 271, making it even more exciting to get back to that track.

TAN Driver Blog-Karen Stalba-TAD

I am getting pretty excited to start the 2012 season. The guys have been working hard to get the car ready and I've been gathering up all the parts for them. We were at the Division 1 Banquet a few weekends ago to get our hardware, and it was a pretty great view from the podium! After many years trying, to go out and win the division with my dad as crew chief is something pretty special. Most of us race with our families, so I know many people have felt the way I do. I have great people beside me. My husband Tommy is going to start his season off in Orlando for the points race, then he is racing Gainesville, so the week in between, we are going where all Champions go -- DISNEY WORLD! Tommy's parents are going with us and it should be a great time...first time taking the kids on an airplane...just me and my mother-in-law. I'll be loaded up with my iPad and Emily's Mobigo to keep the kids busy on the place, and a little Angry Birds on my cell phone should keep them occupied for a bit!

In the off season, we keep pretty busy. With all of Tommy's race cars, he always has something going on, and we've had some house issues, and the business is always pretty busy. Our son, Paul, is playing Ice Hockey two days a week and it is so stinking cute to see those little 5 and 6 year olds skating around. He loves it. He starts kindergarten next year...feels like just yesterday that I was taking a year off of racing to have him.

I need to get back to the track so I can start walking again to get rid of the extra pounds I gained over the winter! Only good thing about extra weight is that my firesuit pants won't fall down so easily! There is always a ton of cooking and eating going on in my house...all I've done since we stopped racing is cook. Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Year's-Poker Game...yes, we had a basement full of 40 guys playing cards in front of a wall of Wallys and we had a feast of food. I love to cook, so I don't mind much and it is always a good time. Even Stat Guy Lewis Bloom made it out for the evening. I make Sweet Potato Ravioli that Tommy goes nuts over...I had to find something to do with the cases of sweet potatoes that the local farm friends bring us! Tommy says I need to sell them to help fund the race car. If I tried that, I don't think I'd ever make it out of the kitchen to actually race! Well, off to sleep...gotta snooze while the kids do so that I can get over this bad cold I have. Until next time!
