Northwesterner Greg Hunter Chasing First Win at Northwest Nationals

Courtesy of NVWMotorsports Promotion

SEATTLE (July 31) – Northwest native Greg Hunter will race at his home national event this weekend. Driving the Synoil Energy Services/ExactAir Top Alcohol Funny Car, Hunter is competing at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways, August 1-3. Despite having four months off since their last national event, Greg and the Geoff Goodwin-led Synoil Racing team are excited to improve upon their performance and race for their first Wally together.

“Our last NHRA national event was the SummitRacing.com Nationals in March, where we reached the semifinals. Over July 4th weekend we ran a match race at the IHRA Rocky Mountain Nationals with John Evanchuk. A lot of our sponsors were in attendance and the car ran well. Since then I've been doing a lot of business stuff with work – that has been going very well – so it'll be nice to go out to Seattle and race again. It's been a while since we've been back at the track and back at an NHRA national event,” Hunter claimed.

Hunter, who resides in Wyoming, last raced at the Northwest Nationals in 2013 behind the wheel of a blown Top Alcohol Dragster. Seattle was the site of his first national event race with his own TAFC in 2004. Now he's back in a methanol-burning Funny Car, eager to push deep into eliminations in front of a home crowd.

“Seattle is one of our team's favorite races. It's a great track and it looks like the temperature should be just right. It's going to be a tough field but we're confident going in that we'll be able to run with anyone,” Greg added.

Greg Hunter and the Synoil Energy Services/ExactAir Top Alcohol Funny Car team will hit the track at 1:45 and 4:30 PM on Friday and noon on Saturday for qualifying. Eliminations begin at 2:45 PM on Saturday and resume on Sunday morning.

Greg Hunter and Geoff Goodwin's Synoil Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car team have joined forces for the 2014 season. With primary support from Synoil Enery Services and ExactAir Compliance Systems, Hunter will run a full schedule of NHRA Mello Yello Series national events and LODRS regional events. Synoil Racing receives additional support from Northgate Industries Ltg., Ron Hodgson Chevrolet-GMC-Buick, Southgate Buick, Twister Piling Inc., Proform Concrete Services Inc., Prowling Contracting, Pumps & Pressure Inc., Waylon's Transport, Hampton's Oilfield Services, Landale Signs, MD Truck Repair, and Castrol.

Demke Returns to West Coast for Northwest Nationals

Courtesy of NVW Motorsports Promotion

SEATTLE (July 31) – Maddern Racing driver Chris Demke returns to the west coast this weekend for the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways, August 1-3. He brings with him the Top Alcohol Dragster national points lead, as well as Wallys from recent wins at Billings, Chicago and Columbus. Momentum and a history of success at Seattle will fuel the California team as they race for national event win number three of the season.

“This is a continuation of that road trip. The car hasn't been back to the shop since it left for Topeka in May. Certainly these last few races have squared our shoulders and given our team a bit of a swagger, but I can't discount the competition that's going to be at Seattle. It's the same bunch of guys that we avoided by going to Columbus instead of Woodburn. Now we're going to face the facts that we have to race these guys. We're going to give it our best. It won't be easy but I think we have a good tune-up for Seattle,” Demke claimed.

Realizing the potential of the competition, Chris Demke knows that his team can't miss a step as the 2014 season reaches the tail end of the summer stretch.

“Everybody is patting me on the back for having the points lead. It's a great position to be in but the season is far from over. Our team can't let our guard down. We have to stay aggressive and keep doing what we do best, and that's winning rounds and winning races.”

The Northwest Nationals bring back bittersweet memories for Demke and the Peen Rite team. They've reached the finals in three of their last five Seattle appearances, including a bizarre 2012 final against Jim Whiteley where both cars coasted to the finish line. The race that stands out most, though, is the 2010 final. Demke won the race when he took the green light. The other finalist and team friend, Mark Niver, passed away following a tragic semifinal accident.

“While we've had some crazy luck at this race in the past, it's also where we lost Mark Niver. I never go to Seattle without Mark on my mind. Whenever I pull to the starting line I'm thinking of Mark Niver,” Demke said emotionally. “That was my second national event win. While my first win was a joyous occasion, that second win taught me that winning isn't always a happy situation. I always like to think that Mark Niver was the real winner of the Seattle 2010 race because he was the last guy to turn on the win light.”

Chris Demke and the Peen Rite/OSI/Boost Performance Products Top Alcohol Dragster will take to the track at 2:15 and 5 PM on Friday and 11:30 AM on Saturday for qualifying. Eliminations begin at 2:15 PM on Saturday and continue on Sunday morning.

Maddern Racing is a family-owned and operated NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster team based in Southern California. The team's Chris Demke-driven Peen Rite/Operational Solutions/Boost Performance Products blown alcohol dragster is owned by Jerry Maddern and crewed by Adam Rhoades, Kevin Watson, Mike Demke, Greg Rice, and Robert Hadaller. Maddern Racing receives support from the following companies: Peen Rite Inc., Operational Solutions Inc., Boost Performance Products, B-G Detection, Afco, and LA X-Ray.

Germain Perseveres in the Face of Adverstiy

Courtesy of Todd Veney/Pro Sportsman Association

If Dave Germain were most people, he would have quit a long time ago.

"We keep thinking we have it figured out, and we keep finding out we don't," says Germain, veteran driver of the Tigercat Top Alcohol Funny Car and a retired firefighter with the patience of Job. "You drive away from the race track Sunday and ask yourself, 'What the hell did we do wrong?' "

Germain has two DNQs and a first-round loss so far this year. Last year, it was four DNQs, a first-round loss, and a second-round loss. The year before that, it was two first-round losses and two DNQs, and the year before that, three first-round losses and a second-round loss. In 2010, he had two first-round losses and a DNQ, in '09 it was three first-round losses and two DNQs, and in '08 he DNQed in his only appearance. That's two round-wins in seven years. A lesser man would've given up.

"You get home from a race," Germain says, "and people will come up and ask you, 'Well, did you win?' The next race: 'Did you win this time?' Next race, same thing. Hell no I didn't win. It's kinda tough out there, you know?"

"I don't know how he's done it," says Eric Krume, Germain's partner on the car, who works about 18 hours a day at Krume Logging and in his "free time" serves as Germain's crew chief. "I don't know what keeps Dave going, but he's always smiling, always happy. I like to tune and want to drive, but I'm not going to bring out another car when we haven't been able to get this one running right."

"We hurt so many pistons, the crew's gotten to be like a NASCAR crew," Germain says. "Only instead of, 'OK, let's change the right-side rubber and gas it up,' it's, 'Let's get this thing torn apart and get some new pistons in it.' Every run it seems to get two or three pistons, and the car just eats parts like you wouldn't believe, but no matter what we do, we can't get it to run. We keep changing stuff and changing stuff and changing stuff, and it gets pretty frustrating. We've changed clutch programs, changed blowers, put a whole new ignition on it I don't know how many times. Last year, we got a whole new chassis. Same thing.

"I'm actually starting to think we're getting bum data from the computer," he says. "You have an idea of what's a lean air/fuel ratio and what's a rich one, but that's all dependent on the boost reading and the flow-meter reading being accurate. You look at the RacePak, and the car should be blubbering rich, but the spark plugs sure don't say that."

Eschewing the computer data and going off what the parts told them, Germain and Krume ran an easy 5.78 last weekend in Woodburn, Ore., that has them and their Tigercat teammates Lee Crosslin, Hal Westerlund, Matt "Ishmael" Fortin, Don Houser, Scott Armstrong, and Kim Germain feeling optimistic heading into to the biggest race of their season, this weekend's Northwest Nationals.

"We just went back to an old tune-up, and the car liked it," Germain says. But, as he knows better than anyone, 5.70s only get you so far when you compete in a part of the country that sometimes has regional events with bumps in the 5.60s.

"There are a lot of Funny Cars out west, and a lot of big hitters from California that we're always up against," Germain says. "You scratch your head and your bottom lip is sticking out when you don't qualify or get beat first round, but there are 16 cars in the field at every national event, and 15 of them are going to be losers. There are hundreds and hundreds of cars at every race, and only eight or 10 of them are going to win. I've been around this deal for a long time, and that's just the way it is."

Krume, 46, is way into the nostalgia scene and has been involved with the sport since the old 64 Funny Car days at Seattle in the 1970s, when he helped out on Jim Green famous "Green Elephant" Vega. Germain, 56, has been hopelessly addicted to drag racing since he converted his '69 Roadrunner, a former SS/DA car, into a street machine when he was still in high school.

"I kept moving up a little, getting stuff a little nicer and a little nicer and eventually ended up building my own Super Comp car from the ground up," Germain says. "People would ask me why I ever moved up from Super Comp to Alcohol Funny Car, and I'd tell them, 'I had to. I was never any good at Super Comp.' In that class, if you're late, you can't make it up. If you don't have about a .017 light every time, there's not a snowball's chance in hell that you're going to win. You need to cut a light in Alcohol Funny Car, too, but if you don't, at least you still have a chance to drive around them."

Calling on the stick-to-itiveness that carried him through decades of risking his life fighting fires for the Tacoma Fire Department, Germain remains as undeterred as ever. "I'm a lousy quitter," he says. "I'm just not good at it. I was a firefighter/paramedic for the city of Tacoma for 30 years, 27 on the rescue/medic unit. You don't quit – someone could die. Most firefighters are adrenaline junkies. No one would ever wish anything bad on anyone, but we were always ready for something to catch on fire, something to happen.

"Drag racing is like that. It's a hell of a challenge. You keep waiting, waiting, waiting for that one exciting run. You'd be amazed at how many people want to give me advice. It's not like we haven't paid tuners. We've paid plenty. People have even told me, 'Hey, you know this guy might be a better driver than you. He's lighter. He's got more experience.' Well, as long as I'm writing the checks, I'm driving the car. Someday, I'll get this deal figured out and think, ''Why didn't I see that a long time ago?' It'll probably be some stupid little thing. But one way or another, it is going to happen."

Ferre Set to Make Top Alcohol Dragster Debut

Courtesy of Cameron Ferre Motorsports

Cameron Ferre is looking forward to reaching another landmark in his racing career. At this weekend’s O’Reilly NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways in Seattle, the 29-year-old California State University Fullerton graduate will be competing in the Top Alcohol Dragster category for the first time.

Ferre has had success throughout his ascension up the world’s fastest-accelerating motorsport from the NHRA Summit Racing Jr. Drag Racing League, where he was the 2002 Western Conference Finals champion, through the NHRA Lucas Oil categories in which he captured a victory at the 2012 Auto Club NHRA Finals in Super Comp. Ferre, who finished in the quarterfinals of Super Comp at last weekend’s NHRA Sonoma Nationals, hopes to carry that forward in his debut behind the wheel of Larry Miersch’s nitro-burning A/Fuel dragster.

Ferre made three runs in the dragster at Auto Club Famoso Raceway to upgrade his competition license. His last attempt was a 5.60-second, 262-mph pass.

“I’m pretty stoked,” said Ferre. “I can’t wait. That thing is a kick in the pants. It picks up and trucks on the back-half.”

The Huntington Beach, Calif., resident began talks with Miersch about driving long ago and received the chance to learn the mechanical side of the car prior to buckling into the cockpit. Miersch gained additional confidence in Ferre’s ability to wheel his 5.2-second, 270-mph dragster last season when he watched him drive nitro veteran Twig Zeigler’s 5.7-second Nostalgia Funny Car.

“I’ve been talking to Larry about it for a long time and learning the ropes by working with him,” said Ferre. “After seeing me driving the Nostalgia Funny Car last year, he decided it was time. I was able to put the sponsorship together to get my license and do a couple races, so here we are.”

The effort is supported by Nitrohead.com, JBS Ltd., Club Ted, and Popeye Energy Drink.

“We’re set for Seattle and potentially beyond,” said Ferre. “I hope to continue to try to put something together for Las Vegas and Pomona at the end of this year and work on the 2015 season. I also have a new Top Dragster coming out this year. The ultimate goal is to drive in Top Fuel one day. I’m slowly progressing, working hard, paying my dues, and seeing what can happen.”

Pre-race rituals or superstitions: I tend to wear the same clothes at every race. If I'm driving there's a couple things in the car that I try to do every time. Demke Pads Points Lead with Columbus Regional Win

Courtesy of NVW Motorsports Promotion

HEBRON, Ohio (July 22) – NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster national points leader Chris Demke added a second regional event win to his 2014 scorecard last weekend when he won the Buckeye Fuel Wars race. Racing at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, Demke qualified No. 1 and scored the win to extend his points lead to almost one hundred points over Joey Severance. The win was the third in a stretch of races that included four events spread out between Montana and Ohio.

Demke put the Peen Rite/OSI/Boost Performance Products dragster in the top spot during Friday's opening qualifying session, running 5.358 at 270 MPH. Saturday rain showers forced the cancellation of one session, leaving teams with a final evening session. Few teams improved and the few that did improve didn't run better than 5.358, so the Maddern Racing team elected to skip the run.

Through eliminations Demke would face three Midwest-based nitro-injected A/Fuel dragsters. The first was Tripp Tatum, who qualified No. 8 with a 5.45. The race was close with Chris finishing first, 5.404 to Tripp's 5.424.

The Jerry Maddern-led team anticipated a challenge in the semifinals, as five-time national champion Bill Reichert would be their opponent.

“You can never take that guy lightly,” Demke said of Reichert. “He's a multi-time champion and he's probably beaten me more times than I've beaten him. That round was going to have huge implications for the points chase so we knew we had to step it up in order to have any shot at beating Bill. We went a little over the curve and it shook the tires. I had to do a little pedal job, so the monkey earned his banana.”

Repeating his first round elapsed time, Chris's footwork was enough to beat Reichert's 5.51. Another challenge followed in the final round. Finalist Dave Hirata had ripped off a 5.26 in the first round and a competitive 5.38 in the semifinals. Most of the challenge, however, took place in the pits, as the California team was left to tune for the finals with data from their previous race in Ohio.

“The tire shake from the semifinals damaged the data recorder. We didn't have any data to tune from, but that's where our experience at Norwalk paid dividends in that what happened at Norwalk told us what the car wanted under those track conditions and atmospheric conditions. We put in a tune-up that mimicked what we used for the semifinals at Norwalk and sure enough it worked,” Demke claimed.

Chris left the starting line first and led for the length of the National Trail quarter-mile, running his quickest ET of the weekend, 5.355/269 MPH to defeat Hirata's 5.376. The North Central Region win, added to recent wins at the Billings regional event and Chicago national event, gives him a lead of almost one hundred points in the NHRA LODRS national points standings.

“To have gone on this crazy trip, with a last minute schedule change – not going to Woodburn and instead going to Columbus – to win three of the four races is just an astounding task. My hat's off to my guys because they put in a Herculean effort. It's still hard to believe that we pulled off what we did,” Demke stated.

On a final note, Chris Demke expressed his thanks to local friend of the team Tim Bucher, who stepped in to assist the 'wounded' team.

“My tuner, Adam Rhoades, slipped and fell and put a big gash in his knee on Sunday morning. We had to drive him off to the hospital to get stitches and it wasn't clear at that time if he would make it back for eliminations. While he did make it back, he was unable to perform his usual task of servicing the clutch. Tim saw all of this on Facebook and came to the track on Sunday to help the team. We rotated (crew member) Kevin Watson to clutch and Tim came in and did bottom end with Hamburger Mike (Chris's brother). He filled in like a champ, and his presence was key to our victory. Having a guy like that to step in and integrate into the crew as easily as he did was huge.”

Maddern Racing is a family-owned and operated NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster team based in Southern California. The team's Chris Demke-driven Peen Rite/Operational Solutions/Boost Performance Products blown alcohol dragster is owned by Jerry Maddern and crewed by Adam Rhoades, Kevin Watson, Mike Demke, Greg Rice, and Robert Hadaller. Driver Blog - Peter Walters

2014 was not going to plan for UK Super Pro ET racer Peter Walters and the Team Reloaded / Walters Motorsport team, with engine troubles at the start of the season resulting in poor qualifying and first round exits. Pete's season did however get a lot better when he receiced a phone call from longtime supporter Derek Flynn of  Gold RV:

Derek said, "Hey Pete, fancy getting your Top Methanol Dragster licence?" Derek knew it had always been a dream of mine to drive a TMD, especially an A/Fueler. After I got over the shock of the call, I didn’t hesitate to say yes! Derek and Gold RV have been longtime supporters of drag racing and have had a really positive influence in my racing career through Juniors, Super Pro ET and now Top Methanol. Thanks Derek - Fiona, Gary and yourself have become great family friends and it is a pleasure to have Gold RV on board, especially when I think of what Gold RV have achieved in Super Pro ET and Top Methanol Dragster in the UK, Europe and even Top Alcohol Dragster in the USA.

The licensing runs went really well. The first run wasn't perfect, as I had to get used to 3500 hp, a totally new car and start line routine, although I must say I felt surprisingly relaxed throughout the process. I believe that this is one of my strengths as a driver and with Derek and Dave Wilson I was being carefully tutored by two of Britain's TMD racing legends who between them have made some of the quickest and fastest TMD runs in Europe. We had a few delays on the day, but the excellent Santa Pod crew sorted it between showers and finally I made it down for the half pass.

The second run went a whole lot smoother, as at least I knew what to expect this time. The burnout was the hardest part, having to warm the carbon brakes whilst at the same time keep the revs under control. The second time staging went perfectly, onto the high-side (full fuel) which is one of the most awesome feelings ever: on full fuel and the clutch out and holding it on the brake the engine gets really angry and rattles the whole car about quite violently even on idle and you hear major cackles and banging going on behind you. It's just brilliant!

The lights ran and I was under instruction to nail the throttle for exactly four seconds unless I felt there was a problem, but I went straight down the middle, no problems, crossing half track at around 180 mph and despite lifting that early and pulling the chutes I crossed the finish line in 7.04 seconds smashing my Personal Best to date. The car had been detuned to allow me to get used to it and we even dropped cylinders on that run but it was an absolutely amazing experience.

Unfortunately rain stopped play, meaning that we could not make the full passes required to gain my licence. Derek, dad and Dave quickly sorted that out though and the remaining full passes to get my licence will be done prior to the European Finals, which will hopefully also help Dave and the team with some more run data after a few recent updates. I wish Dave Wilson and the Silverline team all the best for the European Finals... go Grumpy, A/Fuel it for England.

Thanks to Derek, Dave Wilson, dad and everyone who helped on the day. Everyone seemed very happy with the progress we made, it was an awesome experience and I cannot wait to do it again. I am not sure whose smile was bigger after each of the runs - mine, my dad's or Derek’s. Derek has been unwell recently so it was great to see him back at Santa Pod and happy - get well soon mate.

Many of our friends in Super Pro ET have asked "Are you leaving us?" I would like to say that we are and always will be committed to Super Pro ET, which we believe is one of the best Sportsmans classes in British drag racing. And now that we have sorted a competitive tune-up on our spare engine look out Super Pro ET, we are back. I wonder if you can, or if anyone has ever, double enter for both Super Pro ET and Top Methanol? Wow, that would be an amazing weekend, but you never know what may happen in the future, especially when you have Derek, Gold RV, RW and Dave Wilson Racing in your corner.

I can't thank Derek Flynn and Gold RV enough for supporting me. Gold RV Sales and Service Ltd celebrate thirty years in business this year and they are one of the best in the RV business. I love going to their RV Shop as they work on some awesome RVs as well as selling RVs for their customers, and they always seem to have something really interesting around the shop. Contact Derek, Gary or Fiona for anything RV! Old or new, big or small so long as it is American or Canadian, they can fix or get them all. Their web site is at www.goldrv.co.uk.

I also need to thank my dad, Richard; his love and support of my drag racing career is just the best and I feel really blessed for all the support I get from mum Julie, sister Holley and partner Jayne. Thanks to my long-standing crew Mick Slocombe and Tom Watts who also enjoyed the whole experience too, and my good friend Matt Cox who documented the day in photos.

Thanks to Dave Wilson for allowing me to drive his Nitro Beast, I just loved it! And thanks to all the crew on the day, Dave 'Grumpy' Wilson, David Wilson, Ricki Packham, James Blackman, Alistair 'Mole' Cole and Fiona Flynn.

Two goals I set myself when I started drag racing in Juniors were to win a Super Pro ET National Championship and to drive a Top Methanol Dragster, so I am half way there! We are working on the other half...

Strong Woodburn Outing for Ahten

Courtesy of John Rogers

Woodburn, Ore. – A strong 5.370/261.24 qualifying effort garnered Johnny Ahten the number two qualifying position at last weekend’s NHRA West Regional race at Woodburn Dragstrip. That was the good news. The not so good news was the first round red light. On the other hand, the 5.33/267.37 Johnny posted after a .005 foul showed the power of the Stump Puller and Ahten Racing’s tune-up.

“After the burnout I went to stage, and I had trouble holding it in the lights. I yanked on the brake handle but it just wouldn't hold," said Ahten. "In retrospect, I could have of dragged the brakes harder during the burnout. My Dad and the crew gave me a great racecar and it stinks I went red. It was on a run too. I carried the wheels for 1.8 seconds and picked them up two more times in route to that 5.33 run. The weather was crazy all weekend. The rain with thunder and lightning was really something. Joey Severance and the people at Woodburn Dragstrip really worked their tails off and gave us a great racing surface. This was my first time racing here and I was really impressed," acknowledged Ahten.

"Our first qualifying pass was a planned check-out run that netted 5.502/252.80. That put us #4 and we were ready for more. Our second qualifying pass was later in the day on a 136° track. The Island Renovations / Combust Filters dragster motored right down there to a 5.370/261.24. That launched us up to the #2 spot. In the third round of qualifying no one really stepped up so the decision was made to sit it out to save on parts. Our first round opponent was CleanBoost Oil teammate Garrett Bateman. It would have been a great race if I could have held it in the lights. Now it's on to the next race. We have a bad hot rod and I owe it all to my guys. The power of the Stump Puller will thunder again on August 1st in Seattle for the national event," concluded Ahten. Keep in touch with Ahten Racing at: www.facebook.com/JohnnyAhtenRacing

Corey Michalek Qualifies the KAG A/Fuel Dragster into Stout Norwalk Field

The MBR/Dreher Motorsports A/fuel dragster entry sponsored by the Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) and Champion Spark Plugs qualified #11 amongst a field of 21 of the nation’s premier Top Alcohol Dragster drivers at the 8th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, OH. Taking place over the course of a picture-perfect 4th of July weekend, this was the team’s third NHRA national event appearance as competitors; all of which MBR has successfully made the qualifying field.

Rookie driver Corey Michalek returned to the seat for the second time this year, and the team started the weekend out with a strong 5.455 second elapsed time at 262.03mph during Q1. During the second round of qualifying, the team had an aborted run due to tire shake and ended day 1 in the #10 qualifying spot. The 3,500 horsepower KAG A/fueler took the track one last time early Saturday afternoon and improved on its initial qualifying time by running a 5.445 second lap at 257.73mph to secure the #11 spot in the ladder. Unfortunately, during the process, parts attrition took its toll and MBR’s weekend came to an end before contesting the first round of eliminations.

Fresh off his second event of NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster competition, rookie driver Corey Michalek evaluated the team’s performance.

“Obviously we want to do well every time we show up at the track,” said Corey. “There is definitely a sense frustration when we don’t do well because Kyle and I have such an intense desire to win, just like our teammates, Randy and Jared Dreher. But we’re also realistic because we have been around the sport long enough to fully understand that sometimes there is only so much that is in our control. When you put nitro inside of a race car, parts are going to malfunction and weekends like this are going to happen, unfortunately.”

Michalek wasn’t totally down on the final outcome of the weekend, however.

“On the positive side, though, we persevered enough to rise above the mechanical issues in order to solidly qualify the KAG / Dreher Motorsports A/fuel dragster in the #11 spot. Considering the competition that was on the property, and the fact that the current national points leader was unable to make the show, that was quite the accomplishment.”

The 8th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals also marked the first time that the younger Michalek had piloted a race car down the esteemed Norwalk racing surface. Corey happily recalled his experience of finally getting an opportunity to race at his home track in front of a capacity crowd filled with friends and family.

“Turning the corner in front of the huge Summit Motorsports Park grandstands for the first time was an awesome moment. After standing along those fences for years, to moving behind the car on the starting line as a crew member, it was great to finally be in the position to make a lap down the Norwalk quarter-mile,” said Corey. “Having a huge contingent of family, friends, and MBR supporters on-hand in the stands and in the pits all weekend long was the icing on the cake. Kyle and I are beyond grateful to have the backing of such an awesome support system.”

With 2014’s three scheduled races in the books, Michalek Brothers Racing now shifts their focus to next season and beyond.

“Each year MBR strives to move forward and 2014 has been a year of great progress,” said Kyle. “With the addition of KAG to our team, and the continued support of Champion, Fel-Pro, Sealed Power, and Speed Pro we were able to bring home a National Event win at the Charlotte NHRA Four Wide Nationals. This provides momentum and inspiration to continue building our program so we can increase our participation within the class. We’re confident our team has a lot to offer both on and off the track. We will take the next couple months off to focus on building relationships with current and future business partners, and look to come back strong in 2015. But, if an opportunity comes up to hit the track again this year we won’t think twice about it!”

Demke Reaches Semifinals at First Norwalk Appearance

Courtesy of NVW Motorsports Promotion

NORWALK, Ohio (July 8) – A semifinal finish at one of the toughest races of the season, the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, puts Chris Demke at the top of the Top Alcohol Dragster national points standings. A close race against another stout blown alcohol competitor ended Chris' day in the penultimate round, but the upbeat Californian driver is still content with his recent performance.

Demke qualified the Peen Rite/OSI/Boost Performance Products dragster in the No. 5 spot, running 5.413, 5.344, and 5.434 in the Midwest heat. The Jerry Maddern-owned entry continued to perform in the low 5.4-to-5.3 range as eliminations began on Saturday with a 5.349 first round win over a tire-smoking Dan Page.

Chris eliminated successful Super-class racer Mia Tedesco in the second round in a 5.401 to 5.483 decision. His day would end in the next round when an uncharacteristically-late reaction time and 5.334 pass weren't enough to beat driver Mark Taliaferro and multi-time world champion tuner Norm Grimes, who ran 5.287 to move on.

“What I learned in Chicago is that you always have a chance,” Demke said, referencing his recent upset win. “I certainly went into the semifinals feeling like the underdog. Mark has Norm Grimes tuning his car, and you can see by his elapsed time and mile-per-hour on that run that Norm turned the knobs on high. That makes me feel good that he respects us enough to pour the coals to it when we're in the other lane. We knew we'd have a challenge. I think it's a race that both of our teams have been waiting for all season. They're a great group of guys and I'm glad that we were able to make a good race out of it. 5.28 to 5.34 – I have nothing to complain about. I just need to be on my game on the tree next time.”

This was Maddern Racing's first visit to Summit Motorsports Park, a popular track on the NHRA Mello Yello Series tour. Chris and his team enjoyed their time at the Norwalk, Ohio facility, and they're already feeling prepared for a return trip.

“Norwalk is a fun track,” Chris claimed. “I got a pound of ice cream for a dollar and I really enjoyed myself. The Bader family puts on an exciting show, and hopefully I'll be back here next year.

“The facility is great. The starting line was challenging. The air density was better than the track would typically hold, so we were challenged to get the car through low gear without tire shake. We fought that all weekend. We had an electrical component fail on the semifinal run and the car didn't shake as a result. Sometimes it takes a situation like that to teach you what you should've been doing all along. I think we'll have a better tune-up for the track if we come back here.”

Demke, who has finished second in the national points championship on multiple occasions in recent years, is excited about the rest of the season, thanks to his latest performances.

“This is the third race in a four-week stretch of races. We have two wins and this semifinal finish so I have nothing to complain about. I came into this race tied for first place with Joey Severance so I think this puts me solidly in first place. However, we're only halfway through the season and there's a lot of racing left. I'm just happy to be back in the thick of things,” Chris concluded.

Randy Meyer Struggles to Repeat Success at Norwalk National

Courtesy of Randy Meyer Racing

July 8th 2014 – With momentum of winning the past two races, the Randy Meyer Racing Team expected to deliver more success at their most recent race this past weekend in Norwalk, Ohio for the 8th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.

A 14th qualifying position did not make a strong impression on Driver and Team-Owner Randy Meyer, as his Top Alcohol Dragster struggled to get down the track with parachute problems and losing traction, resulting in the car to run a 5.67 E.T. at 152 mph for the first qualifying pass, a 5.55 E.T. at 167 mph for the second session, and a 5.48 E.T. at 184 mph for the final qualifying session.

Facing the seventh qualifier, Rich McPhillips, for the opening round of eliminations, Randy did his best to tune the car to make a strong pass to defeat McPhillips, but with a difficult track and no lane choice, Randy immediately smoked the tires after launching off the starting line. Randy then backed off the throttle until he saw McPhillips struggle, and got back on the throttle only to smoked the tires once again. However, when finishing the race a head gasket damaged the motor, and Randy was late on letting out the parachutes, causing him to safely stop the car in the sand trap at the end of the track.

“It was a less than expected weekend for us,“ said Randy. “We were hoping to get our third win in a row, but we had a different outcome this weekend. We will take a break for a few weeks and get the car straightened out and ready to race for our 7-week tour that starts with the NHRA race in St. Louis in August.”

This race will air on ESPN2 on July 12th, at 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM ET/3:00 PM - 4:00 PM PT

Randy Meyer Racing would like to thank their sponsors for their support and dedication to the team: Lucas Oil, Smart Chicken, Aeromotive Fuel Systems, NGK Spark Plugs, MOTOR MEDIC, Quik-Latch Products, Boninfante, Taylor Cable, Aeroquip Performance, Belzona Industrial Solutions, Rezner trailers, ARP, Copeland Race Cars, MAHLE Clevite, Hedman Hedders, and Moroso.

Steve Harker Grabs the Wally at Norwalk

Words and photos courtesy of Speed City Racing

From Top Qualifier to Event Winner, Steve Harker swept the Top Alcohol Funny Car Class in his Speed City-CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Motor Oil and new sponsor, Crane Trucking, Monte Carlo at this past weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, July 3-6 in Norwalk, Ohio.

Australian racing veterans and longtime NHRA competitors, Steve Harker and wife, Jenelle debuted at this past weekend’s event in only their 7th national event since returning to the sport after a three year break and proving they hadn’t missed a beat. Harker took the top honors of being the number 1 qualifier in the Top Alcohol Funny Car Class after impressive runs of 5.55et at 265.12mph and 5.54et at 264.39mph.

Consistency is the game and Harker proved his experience as tuner and driver throughout the event, kicking things off in round one with a 5.58et at 263.41mph win over a red-lighting Todd Robertson.

The consistency continued in Round 2 as Harker again laid down another bracket car performance with a 5.58et at 262.82mph pass to defeat Fredd Tigges’ 5.60et at 261.47mph pass.

Semi-Finals time paired Harker and Todd Veney in a wacky battle that saw Harker getting the win light with his slowest run of the weekend 5.65et at 262.74mph defeating Veney’s 5.81et at 252.19mph pass.

In a wire-to-wire battle Harker faced off against Central Region Champion Chris Foster in a race that had the fans cheering in the grandstands. Both drivers where out to win and left nothing on the table with Harker pulling a 0.026 reaction time to Foster’s competitive 0.063 reaction time fighting Harker all the way to the 1320ft finish line. A half a car length is all it took for Harker to drive around Foster to win the event that was decided on the start line as Harker defeated Foster’s quicker 5.61et with his slightly slower 5.62et at 240.77mph pass.

Once again the folks at the Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park put on a great event for the fans and the racers. Show casing spectacular weather and great performances all weekend, the Speed City-CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Motor Oil team can now notch the Norwalk Ohio racetrack off their wally list.

With support from NGK Spark Plugs, Hedman Hedders, Leanders Clutch, CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Motor Oil and Speed City, Steve Harker and team now look to take a few weeks off before competing at the LODRS Central Regional Event in St Louis, MO August 8-9.

Michalek Brothers Racing Staring Down Toughest Test Yet at Norwalk

Corey Michalek to make Summit Motorsports Park competition debut amid stacked field

It has only been 44 days since Michalek Brothers Racing pulled off the Summit Motorsports Park property at the conclusion of the 8th annual Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars race, but for brothers and teammates Kyle and Corey Michalek, it feels more like 44 years. The wait, however, comes to an end this weekend as the team, partnered with Dreher Motorsports, returns to Norwalk, Ohio alongside 24 of the best Top Alcohol Dragsters in the country to vie for the coveted Wally that is up for grabs at the 8th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

MBR returns to Norwalk for the second time in 2014, this time with Corey getting behind the wheel, in the midst of an already eventful campaign. The team started the 2014 racing season strong at the 5th annual NHRA 4-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, North Carolina. With Randy and Jared Dreher making the tuneup calls, the Champion Spark Plugs/Dreher Motorsports A/fuel dragster took home the wally in Corey's national event debut.

“Charlotte was a dream weekend for us; there’s no getting around that," said Corey. "The Drehers worked their tails off to provide us with a race car that was capable of going the distance and we were fortunate to catch a few breaks along the way."

The younger Michalek, looking ahead to his second race in NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster competition, was quick to halt the trip down memory lane.

"Charlotte is in the past now and what we did at that race has zero bearing on what’s going to happen this weekend, as the regional race proved. My goal for this race is first and foremost to qualify. I know that sounds very underwhelming after winning in Charlotte, but with the 24 other cars that will be in attendance, this is going to be one of the toughest fields to qualify for all year. We want to have one of the 16 quickest cars come 1 o'clock on Saturday afternoon and then we’ll re-direct our approach from there.”

"On top of that, I really want to make as many runs as possible just to develop into a better driver. At this point I would say that I'm still going for a ride and trying to play catch up each time down the track rather than being ahead of the car and driving it. I cringe re-watching some of the Charlotte runs because I know I need to be so much better at so many aspects of the driving process."

Michalek Brothers Racing will once again rocket down the Norwalk quarter-mile carrying primary sponsorship from the Kenan Advantage Group (KAG) to actively recruit new mechanics and CDL truck drivers. More information about great nationwide job opportunities with the KAG team can be found by browsing and applying for available positions here (https://intelliapp2.driverapponline....?r=raceRacecar). Longtime MBR supporters, Champion Spark Plugs, Sealed Power, Speed Pro, and Fel-Pro, will also be featured on the Dreher Motorsports A/fueler as Corey makes his maiden voyage down the track at which he attended his first drag race.

“Even though I live in New York now, I still consider Summit Motorsports Park to be my home track. It’s the first drag strip that I ever visited as a fan and I’ve been there for more races than any other facility on tour, but this weekend will be the first time that I’ve driven there. I’m really excited to finally have the opportunity to compete in front of our friends and family at the same place where it all began for me.”

Fans attending the event will be treated to non-stop action all weekend long as "America's Racetrack" celebrates the baddest race cars on the planet with $1/lb ice cream and the Bader family's signature fireworks show. MBR hits the track twice on Friday to kick off the weekend with runs at 12:00PM and 3:00PM. The team returns for their third and final qualifying pass at 12:00PM on Saturday with the first round of eliminations following soon after at 3:00PM. The eight remaining Top Alcohol Dragsters will then battle it out for the Wally with the final three rounds of eliminations taking place on Sunday at 12:15PM, 2:25PM, and 3:40PM.

"It's well known that whenever you come to Norwalk it's going to be a great time, said Kyle. This coming weekend will be extra special with the 4th of July celebration. What is more patriotic than side by side racing at over 270 MPH, and nitro burning engines pushing out over 3,500 horsepower; all capped off with a Bader family fireworks show?! We're looking forward to running hard and having a great time!"

Demke Enters Summit Nationals with Momentum from Route 66 Nationals Win

Courtesy of NVW Motorsports Promotion

NORWALK, Ohio (July 1) – West coast Top Alcohol Dragster hitter Chris Demke won the O'Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals for the second year in a row, winning his second race in as many weeks. Racing at Route 66 Raceway near Joliet, Ill. last weekend, Demke also competed in his seventh JEGS Allstars event. Now Chris and his Maddern Racing teammates carry momentum as they head to the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, July 3-6, for the first time.

Demke qualified No. 1 for the JEGS Allstars shootout race with a 5.39 pass. While typically an advantage, qualifying No. 1 lined up Chris against West Region teammate Joey Severance in the opening eliminations round. Chris improved slightly with a 5.377/268 MPH pass, but Severance improved greatly with a near-perfect .001 reaction time and 5.344 elapsed time.

“The team felt like we were punched in the gut,” Demke said of the first round loss. “We cherish the opportunity to race at the Allstars event. We have done well at the race recently, winning in 2012 and taking runner-up last year. We felt very confident in our chances.

“Going out early was tough to handle, but it gave us all day to take a look at what went wrong. We were able to come up with a solution before we went into national event competition on Sunday.”

Demke and the Peen Rite/OSI/Boost Performance Products team would get another chance to take down Severance, this time in the regular Route 66 Nationals eliminations. Chris first shut down Brandon Booher and Robin Samsel with 5.316 and 5.361 passes, respectively. The semifinal race between Demke and Severance would be epic, with both drivers cutting .038 lights and Chris finishing just one thousandth of a second ahead of Joey – 5.322 to 5.323.

“I figured, 'Okay, this is going to be my last run of the day but I'm going it give it my best.' With Joey's performance lately, not only his car's performance but his performance as a driver, I truly didn't think I had much of a chance. My lights were sub-standard, and I knew I had to dig deep to get to the final. When you feel like the serious underdog and you actually pull off a round win against somebody of his caliber, it's extremely exciting,” stated Chris, who is now tied for first in NHRA national points.

The California team faced another tough opponent in the final round. Both car and driver played equal roles in winning the round, but it was Demke's reaction time that sealed the deal. Finalist Mike Manners ran a 5.305, but Chris' slower but winning 5.313 was enough to win – on a holeshot.

“I was feeling like we had already won the race after our semifinal race against Joey, so it was hard to get up for the final round. Mike Manners ran a 5.26 in his semifinal round, so again I went in feeling like the underdog. We just kept our performance consistent and didn't try anything stupid. The fact that I won it on a holeshot is icing on the cake,” added Demke, the back-to-back Route 66 Nationals champ.

Now Chris and the Jerry Maddern-owned Peen Rite team head to Norwalk, Ohio's Summit Motorsports Park for the 8th Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, July 3-6.

“Every year our team tries to go to a new track that we've never visited. For the last few years, all of the eastern teams have told us that we need to go to Norwalk. After hearing everyone's reviews, I'm really looking forward to experiencing all of the positive aspects of the track for myself – especially the pound of ice cream for a dollar,” Chris laughed.

Summit Racing Equipment Nationals Top Alcohol Dragster qualifying begins on Friday with runs at 12:30 and 3:30 PM. A final session is set for noon on Saturday, followed by first round of eliminations at 3 PM. Eliminations continue on Sunday.

Meyer Wins First JEGS Allstars Race at Joliet

Courtesy of Randy Meyer Racing

June 30rd 2014 – Straight off a win and runner-up finish with their Top Alcohol Dragsters, the Randy Meyer Racing Team earn their 4th win of the season this past weekend at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL. Team-owner Randy Meyer piloted his A/Fuel Dragster to compete in the NHRA National event as well as the 30th annual Jegs Allstars race.

Competing in the Jegs Allstars race for the fifth time, Randy was representing the Central Region of the United States, along side James Stevens of Top Alcohol Dragster, and Dale Brand and John Lombardo Jr. in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Although Randy sits in the lower-half on the ranks in points, his car is first in points with four wins this year alone with Randy and Shayne Lawson sharing the drivers seat, and each earning two wins for the season.

Randy had to battle against the best-of-the-best from each region to earn this year’s Allstars championship on Saturday afternoon. Qualifying in the second spot with a 5.45 E.T. at 267 mph, Randy defeated the seventh qualifier, Dan Page, in the opening round of eliminations, and went on to beat Bill Reichert during second round with a 5.35 E.T. at 268 mph. For the third and final round, Randy was up against Joey Severance, but he was ahead from start to finish, and won the race with a 5.36 E.T. at 267 mph for his first Allstars win. His win also helped the Central Region and Division 5 earn the overall team championship.

On Sunday after a celebratory night, the Randy Meyer Racing Team sat in the 10th qualifying position, facing Marty Thacker, the seventh qualifier, for first round of the NHRA Mello Yello O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 Nationals. Randy beat Thacker with a 5.41 E.T. at 258 mph, but lost during second round running his quickest pass of the weekend, a 5.36 E.T. at 269 mph to Joey Severance’s 5.29 E.T.

“It’s an exciting time for the team to be winning races,” says Randy. “It felt good to finally win the Allstars after coming close in the past. After getting off to a slow start on the weekend, we got the car performing better. Unfortunately we didn’t put ourselves in a good qualifying position, but we are regrouping and headed to Norwalk.”

This race will air on ESPN2 on July 5th, at 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM ET/10:00 AM - 11:00 AM PT

The next race for the Randy Meyer Racing Team will be this upcoming weekend at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series 8th annual Summit Racing Equipment Nationals. Randy finished in the quarterfinals at this race last year, and is looking to claim his third win this year.
